I was awaiting a lane this weekend at 2 different gun shops/ranges. I seen the phone attendants answer between the 2 ranges, over a dozen callers asking for price.

Both ranges gives the std "I can't provide prices over the phone". Now if you called for a holster, box of ammo or anything else, they will give you a price.

a internet store will give you a price, but why not a a gunshop over the phone or a firearm?

The simple answer is, to get you IN the store.

For the most part, the internet dealer knows you're not coming in.

    Have fun,

Agreed. The local dealers probably don't want you comparison shopping via the Yellow Pages. All the my local dealers gladly give the price over the phone, so I haven't found it to be an issue.

As others have said, to get you in the store. Also, they don't want their competitors to know their prices with something as simple as a phone call.

Not only gun stores do it, when I worked in a liquor store we did the same thing.

I've never had a gunstore refuse to give me a price over the phone.

If one does, they just lost a customer.
    And I'll tell them that.

I didn't understand why they didn't give prices over the phone until I worked in 2 gun shops. The owners explained that the person calling could be another store owner & if we gave a price on a Glock 17, (for example) of $500.00, they could just advertise it for $485.00.

The shop where I bought my G23 gave me a price over the phone. So did Gander, Academy and Carter Country.

I would not buy from a store which did not provide prices over the phone.

If you are calling to price shop don't be sneaky about it. Tell them what your looking for and the price you found it at and ask them if they can do better. If yes deal made, if not back to the other store.

I've never had a store refuse to give a price. if they DON'T give a price - how can I know whether or not I want it? I might call a store that is an hour or 2 from my house - you think I'm going to drive 2 hours just to check prices?

I call several shops all the time and have never had that problem. A couple of places probably should not give out prices, I do not see how they stay in business.

I've never tried to get a price over the phone but have noticed that some gun shops wont put prices on their guns in the display cases. My guess is they want you to talk to them about the firearm you are interested in so they can up the chances of a sale. I feel this works against them on days in which they have more potential customers than sales staff. Usually when I go to a gun store I know what I want and am just there to price it. They run the risk of losing the sale if I have to wait around to get a price check.
