I had something similar happen to a friend. He was assigned to an EOD unit at Erie Army Depot and was called out to check a suspicious package in a large USPS mail box in Sandusky, Ohio. While he had his head in the mail box preparing to attach a line to the package, a reporter got past the police line and took a flash picture over my friend's shoulder. He said later that his first thought was "I always wondered if you could see the flash!" He was referring to the package detonating. When he figured out what happened, he tried to put the reporters camera in a very uncomfortable place. Unfortunately, the police intervened.
Thanks for the pictures, guys ! My father was a 55D for 27 years. Retired from the Army back in '74 with all his fingers and toes. My cousin was Marine Corp EOD. They're gonna enjoy these pictures.
