Why are machete sheaths always crapola? Machetes are the most usefull blades around, but the sheaths are always crap. I'm at the point where I'm going to hire a Mexican to make me one custom leather.

I think it's because most machetes are usually crapola. While useful they don't exactly qualify as fine cutlery.

What machetes you talkin' about, Wolfer? I don't have one yet, and any brand recommendations are always appreciated (especially here on GT, where a conversation might break out as a result). :)

    +1

It's hard to find a good machete that is deserving of a sheath more than a folded piece of canvas.

I wouldn't say always. I have a machete that I brought back from Panama in the late 70's and its leather sheath is in great shape. Okay, maybe it's actually old and worn, but it doesn't really look any different than when I brought it home. It's held up great and promises to continue to do so.

Machetes are cheap and made of soft steel, so they are the ultimate use and abuse blade. Like Rodney Dangerfield, they don't get no respect. That is both their strength and weakness. Most I've seen are made by Ontario Knife.

They are cheap because nobody wants to pay for a fine tooled leather sheath. Because they don't need one.
