Only going by the show, Id say the /mccoys.

Sure, a Mccoy was killed first...but they didnt go after the guy that did it. SHTF, when the Mccoy's murdered Devil's brother. They executed the murderers and it went from there.

Just finishing up part two now. It seems to me all of this could have been avoided if the McCoy's weren't so obstinant. The show seems to have a Hatfield leaning to me. I don't know enough about the real history to know if that is fact or not.

This is my take on it as well. The show definitely slants towards the McCoy's being the bad guys. Who knows for sure?

Family stories have it that the McCoys started it over a pig that was stole.Somewhere along the way we are related to the Hatfields on my moms side.

One never really knows what happens way up in the woods.

seems to be it started over the timber rights and that the lawyer Cline was involved quiet a bit. he seems to manipulate the Mccoys.

Remember, this was a television show whose aim was to entertain.... no matter what Kevin Costner had to change... As far as obtaining information for a decision of "who was at fault" then television should not be the first source to consider. Quite a few things in this show got changed from what was historically recorded as happening....

We sure got tired of the commercials every 9 minutes in the third segment. It's like they ran out of material. Too bad Costner decided that it had to be filmed in Romania. There are out-of-work people in the film industry right here at home that could have used those jobs.

I liked it and was iressed with the realism of what was happening.

I too thought it got real weak about half way thru the second episode....

A Hatfield killed a Macoy first. Uncle Joe iirc. He was a piece of work and played pretty well I will ad. But the Hatfield desertion was too much for the Macoy to swallow. I see everything as exert thing else was a product of that desertion. Hatfield thought in his holy than thou opinion he done enough and the Macoy toughed It out, but lost everyone he was there with and got home. Hatfield figured he did enough for the cause, took his ball and left. I understand 110% the Macoys distain for that behavior.

Both where at fault pretty, equally, as I saw it. Plumb stuburnness of the Macoy side and self richness on the Hatfield side. (Kevin Cosners character mostly)

I enjoyed it very much and thought it very well done.

    This is my understanding-

    Hatfield (to McCoy):
"So, which do you think is the more effective self-defense round, 9mm or .45 ACP?"

I thought that it was a combo of Harmon McCoy being killed by Uncle Vance Hatfield and the pig incident.

The moral of the story is that hillbillies and firewater = murder.

The 5000 acres of timber rights that the McCoys lost to the Hatfields is what "started" it. In real life there was 10 years between Harmon McCoy being shot and any kind of McCoy retaliation. It was also about 10 years from the Harmon McCoy death till the timber dispute. So maybe the first murder just burned em deep inside and then the timber loss set them off. The show did not do just how big a deal the timber rights loss was to the McCoys. They also didn't do justice to how much richer and more well connected the Hatfields were. Also the Hatfields were a much larger clan. McCoy was fighting a loosing battle from day one. And in the end he lost wwaayyyy more than the Hatfields, hell he lost five kids (not counting his daughter that died of nature causes).
