Who has an ACOG? How good are they? What weapons do they work with?

Who has an ACOG? What rifles will shoot inline with the dots on the scope? It is adjustable for all rifles or just for a full size M16? I want to put one on an M1A Socom. Maybe I need a different rail? How good are these for CQB such as 25 yards? My understanding is that they are a medium to long range scope...

Can't go wrong with an ACOG. I bought the same model I was issued as soon as I got out. I had mine mounted on an M4 while I was in, and still do in the real world today. The difference in POI compared to the M16 ranging marks on the reticle is negligible.

Harley is correct in saying that they make models specifically for .308/7.62 NATO. You will definitely need an over-receiver rail on any M1A in order to use an ACOG. With a quality mount, I imagine that the two would pair up really well, though.

I have a TA-01 NSN on one of my Colt 6920s.
    http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/products1.cfm?PartID=142&back_row=4&categoryID=3

It's a very nice scope, clear and bright. Almost indestructible.
Very accurate at different ranges using the different aiming points.

I've fired out to 300yds with 100% hits on a man sized target.
The iron sights on top are "adaquate" for CQB work out to @ 25yds.

It's more of an install and forget type of rifle sight.
It's definately not a "target" scope.

Be sure you get one calibrated for the 7.62 round if you're going to
put it on an M1-A. (They have different calibrations for 5.56 and 7.62.)

I have a TA01NSN on one of my AR Carbines.
It is very clear and built like a tank.
It is a great scope but it is not an all purpose scope.
With it's 4X power it is NOT a CQB scope but a mid range scope with optimal use out at 50-300 yards. For closer distances (out to 100 yards) I think Aimpoint scope is better.

I have a TA31F on an M4'gery, which works well, and my son has a TA01NSN on his M4'gery, which we both prefer. We haven't gotten the hang of the chevron sighting system on the TA31, but the TA01 with the cross hairs works REALL WELL. If I could do it again, I would get the TA01NSN.

I have a mini ACOG on an AR - It's a great scope, but it's inferior to a red dot for CQB...During rifle class drills at close quarters it's not uncommon to see people shooting great groups on the WRONG target - magnification is not always a good thing...

Are they really worth the $1100-$1200 for non-combatants? I realize the extra money goes into bomb proofing them. But, that's the price of a good sniper scope with better optics.

They were actually designed for CQB. The premise is you shoot the weapon with both eyes open. You see the target in normal visual perception through your left eye, but your right eye, being your aiming eye, sees a zoomed in version of the target letting you precisely engage it. (This is if you're right handed. It would be the opposite if left handed.) However, they do have the 4x power allowing an easier engagement of targets at further distance.

I only used it once or twice, but one of my buddies used it quite a bit the last time we were downrange. It's a good piece of equipment.

I'm almost certain there are guys out there on the net who would trade an 01 for a 31.

They would likely trade and kick in an extra 1-200 bucks, too.

Non-combatants or not, they are worth it to those of us who have them. Whatever floats your boat.

If you do get some type of scope and remove the carry handle, where do I buy the piece that "raises" the scope up so the front sights are not in the way?

You can get ACOG's own mount, or get the LaRue's mount. The front sight won't be "in the way".

I have a TA01NSN and would trade it for a TA31F and I'll add some cash on my end.
    LMK if you are interested.

I would never put an ACOG on an M1A. It's just too hard to mount properly.

I think they are. During the day they are not much better than any other optic out there but at night you really see the difference. If there is any background lighting you will have a crystal clear view of your target. I'd like to put a 4x ACOG on my hunting rifle.
