I took my first 3 deer w/open sight rifles. First was a running shot at about 220 yds w/a .300 winmag from an open sighted Remington 700. Second and third were with an 8mm Mauser. Second was about 180 yds. Third was about 90 yards. First one was when I was capping a push. Second and third were when I was pushing. I took my fourth deer with a Tikka 595 scoped. Ugh, I missed some easy running shots because of the scope. In the tall sloughs, it can be a bit difficult tracking a bounding whitetail. But it came in handy when one was standing broadside at about 240 yds. Clean kill. Anyway, I prefer to push the deer and the quick shots. Open sights are handy for this. I wish I could find a non-milsurp bolt gun in 6.5x55 w/open sights. Does any such beast exist? I could only find one...the CZ w/funky Bavarian stock.
