I would say 9mm and .45, due to combat use. And various .22's for hunting, but what about documented shootings?

Its really a nothing more than a trivia question for me, which has more relevance than a lot of OP's around here. I'm asking anyone who may know something. We've all heard about the one-shot stoppers, but which rounds turn up in fatal shootings the most often? I am beginning to think that I like ammo more than guns, that's all. Seems to occupy more of my research time than specific gun-related topics.

I think you have to specify. In America, or the world in general? If it is the world in general, military combat included, I'd guess 9x19mm. If you were talking just the USA, civilian shootings, I might still say 9x19mm, but wouldn't be surprised if it was .380 Auto. IIRC, the cartridge with the most "kills" as you put it in America is the .22lr. However, I don't stay too up to date on those stats.

There have been threads by Several CSI Officers and Wound Experts that may have some data.

I would also have to agree on the 9mm and .45 cal. The Army had the 1911 in service in three wars.

If you're talking police in this country & home defense shooting since 1900, I would probably say .357mag.

It has no relevance as anything can & will eventually kill, regardless of caliber. DOn;t make it to the E in time & you will eventually die from a COM shot, 22lr to 600NE.

It's not PC, it's mind set. Unless you are running ops in Iraq or hunting game, the "killing" potential of a bullet is not really relevant. 99.9% of all gun owners will NEVER fire a shot in SD & if they do, it's TO STOP THE ATTACK. That is the correct mind set. Whether th BG ddies or not is not your concern, it's STOP THE ATTACK. Anything other than that I you'll find yourself in a very dark emotional place very quickly. Not to mention the legal ramifications when they pull your computor & find krap questions like this.:whistling:

All that tells you is that the average street thug likes his 9mm.
