I have a Glock 31 and have been reading through the forum to learn what is the difference between a laser light and a flashlight that attaches to the underside of the barrel. Can anyone explain in simple terms the pros and cons of each (a full flashlight vs a laser dot), and what brands are good? There's so much data it's hard to know what is good, especially since I'm not a gun knowledge hound.

Gun mounted lights are for illuminating a threat that you may wish to target. Since the light is in line with the bore, you are essentially pointing the gun at the subject anyway.

The laser sight is for targeting the threat, period. With training, it allows you to hold the gun on target, while visually sweeping the room.

You can install both as separate components, or together in one module--a light and laser combination.

An example of the first would be a LaserMax and TLR-1 light.

An example of the latter would be a TLR-2 Laser/Light combo.
