A new study from insurance comparison site Insurify that looked at over 2 million insurance applications found that drivers of the Subaru WRX compact sports car are more likely than any to have a speeding ticket on their driving record. A whopping 20.49% of WRX owners in the group said they had received a citation, which is nearly twice the national average of 10.54%. The WRX also claimed the dubious title last year. The Volkswagen GTI, which is one of the WRX competitors, was second at 17.38% while the Subaru Impreza that WRXs are based on came in third at 15.9%. The Infiniti G37 (15.61%) and Dodge Dart (15.45%) rounded out the top five. Dodge and sister company Ram put four models on the list, with the Dodge Challenger of 200+ mph Hellcat fame, Ram 2500 pickup and Dodge Charger sedan taking the seventh through ninth spots behind the Hyundai Veloster in sixth and ahead of the Nissan 350Z in 10th.

There's a reason for the high insurance rates of the WRX. A Mustang GT has cheaper insurance.

And, since insurance rates are based on statistics rather than common sense or logic, insurance premium rate reasoning gets really stupid sometimes.

When I was buying my daughter a car, we shopped insurance rates. A Civic or Corolla would have been about $2,100/yr for her. A Miata would have been about $700. Which of the 3 would a driver be more likely to take a 90 degree corner at 40 mph with? Or do 120 mph? The 3x premium for a Civic or Corolla are because 90% of teenagers drive those instead of Miatas, so there are far more wrecks with Civics or Corollas.

Like it or not, insurance companies largely look at two things for rates on any given vehicle: how often it is involved in accidents and how much money is paid out in claims when they are. As you said, it's based on statistics and historical, verifiable data. There's not really a better way to do it and still predict your loss ratio.

My Dodge Challenger has a feature which shows the highest top speed the car has been driven. On my way home from the dealership, with just 46 miles on the odometer, I found this setting for the first time. Before I bought the car, someone had "test driven" it to 104 miles per hour. Jerk!

I'd worry less about the top speed and more about the rate by which they got there.

    About twelve seconds?

I'd rather see the wrx that is going a bit too fast keep moving, and the focus on who deserves a ticket get shifted to the jerks blocking traffic by going way too slow and never letting anyone pass them.

We call the WRX and GTI crowd "muffler kids" in my neighborhood because all they do is race around with loud mufflers and backfiring type noises all the day long.

It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
