Right now I am carrying 155 grain Federal Hydrashoks. I am thinking about switching over to Speer Gold Dots, maybe 155 grain or 165. I also looked into the 180 grain short barrel from Speer.

    What do you prefer? Why?

    Thanks,

Hornady 165gr critical defense. Made for short barrels, not too much recoil or flash and reliable expansion.:wavey:

I carry Speer GD 180, not short barrel, in my G27. I like GD and have carried GD in various calibers for years.

I would like to carry the Hornady CD, or at least give it a try. SOP says we have to carry a jacketed hollowpoint, and I don't believe the critical defense round applies.

Cor-Bon 135 grain jhp. Back up mag is loaded with whatever "cruiser weight" ammo I have handy at the time of loading it. Right now it's 155 grain silvertips, but always mid weight 155-165 stuff.

For whatever reason, I do not carry my 27. If were, I would probably use the same ammo for my 23, which is Federal HST 180 gr JHP.

180gr Gold Dot not short barrel - it's what I'm issued. No love there for the short barrel version but wasn't my decision. IIRC at the time there was some concern of clogging of the larger cavity and less expansion with the short barrel version. Have also heard of more feed issues. I have not tested the short barrel version so can't say for sure but have been pleased with the standard GD.

In my personal G27 I have carried 165gr GD but now keep 180gr in both.

    I have 165gr & 180gr HST, but I carry 165gr because I group the 165s better

Back when I carried it and when I occasionally do carry it, it's either 165 Gold Dot or 165 Ranger T-series.

165 grain loads (1,150+ fps from a 4" barrel loads) are the only loads I will carry in any of my .40's.
