    Hey Everyone...

This may be a bit of a newbie thing... but oh well.

I'm trying to find info on where it is legal to hunt in California.

I'm not so concerned with private vs. public land (well, at least getting permission, anyhow) but more on where I can hunt rabbit and other small game with my 22LR without concern of being in an area where it is illegal to discharge a firearm... I've looked over the California hunting guide book, and I understand the laws surrounding the game I'm after, but there is no mention of where it is legal to discharge a firearm.

    Please Help!

I live in Southern California, Northern Los Angeles County. I frequent Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.

It's been a while since I hunted in California. Last time, there was a section in the handbook regarding caliber/restrictions. It should say there. If not, check with the Sheriff's office where you want to go.

If I'm not seriously mistaken unincorporated areas of LA County are off limits for taking rabbits (all small game) except with shotguns. I believe that the National Forest areas of LA County are open. But check with LASD just to make sure.

Have not been hunting down south since I went out with my dad as a kid...he had 6 greyhounds he raced and took them jackrabbit hunting for training. Incredable site watching a greyhound chase down a rabbit...

I am in San Luis Obispo County, on the Santa Barbara County line...check this site out, my give ya some ideas.

Call your local hunting or wildlife state agency and get the exact map coordinates from them.

Local police depts also have a couple of officers who hunt too.

Keep a GPS locator on too with their instructions just in case a game warden says you're out of bounds.

Don't trust us. It's your 10/22 and your behind in the sling.

Get the maps and mark them.
