I was notified by the assistant head of household that we will be going on vacation the last week of June.

The word "Florida" came up immediately. I retorted with North Carolina.

Since I'm not drinking, the beach sounds awful boring. The 15 year old boy and 12 year old girl agree.

I'm thinking more of an activity oriented short trip. Maybe rafting, hiking, and/or zip lining.

St. Augustine is in the mix, only because it seems more interesting than the Alabama gulf coast or the Florida panhandle.

Flying is out. The boy will not fly. My driving limit is in the 10 hour range. I live in NE Alabama.

This will likely be the last "family trip" for us. The boy is already beginning to go his own way.

    Suggestions?

I'm with your boy. I won't fly either. I've got thousands of miles logged but gave up flying because I prefer to have my prostate exams in a doctor's office.

St. Augustine is a nice place to visit. You might want to try kayaking instead of rafting. I know you can rent kayaks there but I'm not so sure about rafts.

There is a lot of history to be explored and the more modern attraction, the St. Augustine alligator farm.

If you change your mind, St. Augustine also has a nice beach.

I should add that hiking in St. Augustine in June is not something I consider pleasant.

There really isn't much significant rafting to be had in Florida. There are plenty of rivers and estuaries you can kayak through. Something near the St. Johns would be relatively close to where you are.

If the 15 year old boy is discounting the beach I questions his upbringing :tongueout:

Here's a shot from one of the surf contests at the Cocoa Beach Pier. I think there was surfing too..

Ever seen a dog turn his head at odd angles while looking at you because you are talking but he doesn't understand?

That is what I'm doing after reading that...

Kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, bike riding, fishing, swimming, boating...

    :dunno:

I realized very early in my parent life, that vacations are not for parent's pleasure. Is all for the kids! For the parent is just work away from home, cause you have to make accomodations and planning just for their entertainment. So just surrender and ask the kids, where would they want to go. If you give them what they want, they may give you a break, so you can have a little fun. Of course my range of ages are: 3, 8, and 12. It may be different for you. By the way, we are doing a week at Schlitterbahn Resort at South Padre Island the second week of June. You stay inside the park and have the kids run wild with no worries. They also offer daycare (for the 3year old). So there is a chance Mrs.fgutie35 and I may have a little fun of our own.

Not drinking? What's the point in going anywhere?
