...will the gen 3 parts still be available? May be a stupid question, but I just wanted to know, thanks.

As far as I've read, the Gen 4 is an option. Not a replacement platform. I'm guessing gen 3 part will pretty much ALWAYS be available.

Either way......yes, parts will be available. There are MILLIONS of Glocks in service, there's no way they could stop making parts for them.

You can still buy Gen 2 and 1 specific parts (2-pin slide stop lever) all of these years later...

There are likely 2+ million 3rd gen Glocks out there in the hands of heroes... don't think for a second that they are going to stop making Gen 3 specific parts any time this century.

Actually, Glock is now saying they will go away as the Gen4's are replacements. It will be a slow process, but they will be replaced.

They say that the 19/23 (Along with some others, like the G37) Gen4's are scheduled to be released around summer this year.

So, it's going to be a slow process, but the Gen3's will slowly fade into the sunset.

Wouldn't all the parts on a Gen 3 work on a Gen 4 with the exeption of the recoil spring assembly and magazine release?

All manufacturers like to reduce SKUs and increase turns. Given this fundamental of business, I predict that by 2011 (next issue of Autopistol?), Glock will replace all models that currently have standard and SF grips with a single Gen4 model. They have had a proliferation of models recently and one of their corporate goals with the Gen4 design has to be to reduce the number of variants they have to produce (and they and their dealers have to inventory). So, if you like any of the Gen3 SF models (20,21,29,30), I would recommend you make plans to buy one this year.

As far as I understand the parts are the same except for the guide rod assembly right?

I prefer the gen3 to the gen4 features so I've added a 'spare' or two

I'm gonna miss it. For some reason it's my favorite generation, even though a 2nd Gen G17 is what inspired me to get my 3rd Gen G17!

Oh well, I'll be getting a Gen 4 G22 when my funds allow it!

I suspect that the new generation will replace the old in terms of complete pistols. However, I also suspect glock will support its older models with parts. Glock unlike Sig has been very good in this regard in the past.
