It is time to upgrade now. You have a legitimate need for a feature the new phone offers and your old phone doesn't. Simple. Just do it.

+1. Apple updates, but I admit I've been looking. I have an iPhone SE (like an iPhone 5).

I usually wait until the battery in one phone will not make it through a normal day.

Wife, daughter and I always trade together .

My flip phone is giving me some problems. I hope they are still available.

    No problem.
Even Wal Mart has them and you can find them on the net.

I took the last phone I bought (from Wal Mart I think) to AT&T because I thought I was paying AT&T too much a month for (AT&T) service.
I stopped in the local AT&T office and they changed "the plan" to $27 a month. Unlimited calls, etc.

I pay $54.00 month w/A.T.&T. This is unlimited calls,no long distance chg. and lots of tax.Best deal I could find. All the mandatory charges really drive the bill up.I checked and this is a fair deal.

My Xfinity wireless service is basically free as long as I confine myself to using wifi and not data. Of course, I'm overpaying for the internet that is required to qualify for the cheap wireless service, so there is that.

BTDT, I work and play with a lot of stuff that requires bare hands in that and much colder weather.

You certainly have my admiration for winter camping, seems it would be quite a challenge.

Whether you get a new phone or not you might consider using these or similar:

    https://hothands.com/

I use them on all day hikes, horseback rides and other activities in cold weather. One in a pocket can warm up a cold hand. One in your pack can warm and / or dry a second pair of gloves.

Oh, and to avoid thread drift - just get the damn phone, you know you want it and you're gonna end up with one sooner or later, lol.

I have a whole box of hand warmers, they are a must have on winter trips. Still undecided on the phone, but leaning toward getting it. The only way I’d truly save money would be to skip the iPhone 11 and the 12. I think it’s unlikely this phone would “last” until summer/fall of 2022. If I’m going to upgrade a year from now, it makes financial sense to do it before the 12 comes out, since my 8 is worth more now.

I've always ran mine until they died. I'm currently using an iPhone XR, I upgraded (from a 6s) because I got a buy one get one deal when I added my son to the plan. My wife recently swapped out the screen, battery and speaker on her 6s+ on her own. It was fairly easy and inexpensive. If the XR's can be rebuilt as easily, I'll have this one for awhile.

I have an XR (personal) and a 7 (work) and although they are different I could use either one as my only phone.

I think it is time to upgrade when you are unable to update or you can’t download or run apps...or if the battery takes a dump and the cost to replace is similar to an upgrade.

Buck, I'd hope if you were trapped under a tractor that the neighbors would quickly notice the lack of shootin' coming from your place and come investigate!

I'm still using my 5S, and hope to keep it going for a while more yet - it's served me well and is still working, so I see no reason to move on from it.

I used a Samsung RH-500 flip phone for 14 years. Still had the original battery...I got three days from a charge. I dropped it in a small puddle pheasant hunting one time and the external display shorted out.

I "fixed it" by banging it on the hood of a car.

The ONLY reason I upgraded was text messages sent to my phone started getting scrambled because the code for over the air patches was no longer supported.

When do I upgrade...when I have no choice.
