What's your preferred carry load for a 3" 9mm?

Gotta figure out what I'm going to use in my PM9. I think +P/+P+ might be largely wasted in a 3" barrel. So I guess I'm leading toward 124gr or maybe 147gr. I'd just go Gold Dot Short Barrel if it were the same price as the regular stuff.

I would recommend something 124 gr +P if you aren't into buying the Gold Dot short barrel which is probably the best for your sized gun. The extra velocity from the round helps keeps the bullet moving fast out of even a shorter barrel. Another good choice if you don't mind 115 gr would be the Hornaday Critical Defense line which is also designed specifically for sub handguns.

A lot of people argue that 147 gr is a poor choice for a 3" gun due to it already being a slower round that is traveling even slower due to the barrel length. There are of course other arguments which contradict this but my personal preference leans to something faster.

    I personally favor Winchester PDX1 124 gr +P in my G26 and PDX1 147 gr out of my P229.

IMO, short bbls is exactly why you would want to use +P or +P+ ammo. Bullets like to expand within certain vel range. Take 50fps off, the bullet is not likely to work the way it was designed. I woudl go 124gr+P. I currently carry the BH 124grXTP+P. It runs 1220fps in the short bbl. I would say that was not wasted.:dunno:

Stick with modern jhp loads. They are not as velocity dependent as old ammo designs.

I use Federal HST 147 grain in my 9mm guns either full size or sub compact. These rounds have expanded just fine on denim, phone book and water jug tests I've done.

I currently have 147gr HST +P loaded in my PM9. I can't really say I notice any difference in recoil with the +P's than with standard pressure loads.

I really like the HST's, but my supply is a bit limited because they were hard to find for a while. So when I came across a good deal on 147gr Ranger T's (RA9T), I bought a lot of those.

When my HST's finally run out, I think I have enough Rangers to last me forever.

Federal 135+p LE Only in in theory, but you can find some if you look for it. It is the federal LE contract 9mm; I have a case or so that I would sell at a per box rate, PM me if interested.

    I use Ranger T 124g +p in my pm9, I don't think it's rated for +p+. I do use the Ranger T 127g +p+ in my Glocks though.

I like 124 +P HST JHP in my EMP9... very accurate and modest recoil. I save the 147g GDHP for my G19 longer barreled guns gun feels sluggish with that stuff. Never chronoed it out of my EMP9 but I could imagine not fast enough for full expansion as Fred said above.

I just got a Kel Tec PF-9 gonna use either Double Tap 115g +P or Corbon 115g JHP +P JHP's in that one.

    I didn't think Speer made a +P+ 124 load. Do you mean 115 grain?

I had a Kel-Tec PF9 (3.1" barrel) and chrono'd some 124gr +P HST's. They averaged 1132fps. Not too shabby for such a short barrel and still within the "window" for expansion.

I like the +p 147 grain HST. The HST bullet expands well even at slower velocities.
