Hi. I am a new member and have yet to get my first Glock. Will probably start with a 43x.

There's nothing obviously appealing about a Glock, just to look at it. I wouldn't imagine that it's more enjoyable to shoot than an all-metal gun. There's no rare-gun cool factor. They're inexpensive, but not super-inexpensive.

Why have they become so dominant in the market? What's so great about them?

Glock pistols are easy to maintain. Relatively easy to shoot. Highly customizable. Enjoy and be safe.

Reliable, simple, accurate, easy to shoot well, and have a huge level of aftermarket support.. At one time, they were cheap, but their prices have gone up. Now there are other competitors in the poly-striker market that may offer a better combination of those traits. But Glocks still get the job done.

Simple - they are the AK of the modern pistol world. They run, they run anything you put in them, and they just run.

    The name.

Would not be as cool if the designer's name was Bob Nozzle.

Limp wristing conversations could also be misinterpreted.

Affordable mags and lots of aftermarket support.

Used to be the most reliable polymer gun, but there are other polymer brands that can make the claim now.

Reliability. That’s it. Many more pleasurable guns to shoot and look at. But I don’t want to carry anything that might not go bang when I need it to.

There is one thing that attracted me to Glocks, reliability. Mine just goes bang every time I pull the trigger. Second, easy to work on and damn near rustproof. Cost and the fact that selling used doesn’t get much so I keep them.

Everything positive except the grip. Many guns are much more ergonomic. YMMV

    1. Super reliable.
    2. Simple design. Even I can work on it.
    3. Near rust proof.
    4. Great aftermarket support. Easy to find holsters and spare parts.
    5. Near indestructible. You can throw it across the road, drive over it with a car, drop it in the ocean and leave it there for weeks, drop it from a two story building...and the thing will still work.
    6. Simple manual of arms. Simply point and shoot.
    7. The polymer frame actually absorbs some of the recoil
    8. Low bore axis.
    9. For the double stack models...the smaller gun can use the larger model's magazine. (Of same caliber)
    10. On many of the larger size calibers, you can easily convert the gun to fire other calibers. (The forty caliber Glock 23 can easily be converted to fire 9mm and .357 sig.)
    11. Each model looks alike. The wife won't know that you bought another one.
    12. They are ugly guns. But their uglyness conyeys a certain type of seriousness which is a good thing for defensive pistols.
    13. They are so ugly I don't have to worry about scratches on the finish. It's no 1911 you know..
    14. Unlike other manufacturers, Glock really only makes one type of pistol. If you can work on one model, you pretty much understand the other models. (Granted there's minor changes with the Gen 5.)
Compare that to Rugers. They make all kinds of firearms.... AR15s to revolvers, 1911s, polymer semi auto pistols, etc)

Are you talking about what’s so great about polymer guns versus metal or are you asking about why Glock amongst polymer guns?

    Polymer versus steel:
    1. Weight (for carrying around all day)

    Glock versus others:
    1. Reliability
    2. Aftermarket support

They’re simple, reliable, and I shoot them extremely well, they may not be excellent in every category, but they’re excellent in enough of the right categories to form a winning combination

Reliability here too. Got sick of tinkering with 1911s.
