A long time ago someone sold a kit to hook up in the Vaccumm Modulator hose of the Transmission. When you opened the line to atmosphere it made the car shift hard. There were varying orifices of different size. Zero Vaccumm means you're at full throttle, hence the "hard" shift. A broken Vaccumm line could be the cause of your car's shifting difficulty. Good luck.

AOD trans in an 87 does not have a vacuum modulator.

They use a linkage rod or a cable from the throttle to the trans throttle lever.

Check to see if the plastic grommet that holds the linkage/cable in place at the throttle has broken.

It is a pretty common failure and a cheap fix.
