After the "Beta" testing is done and the product is proven, stable, and defendable what do they call it.

I *think* some refer to it as 'Going Gold'... but I may be mistaken.

Or in the cases of S&W and Beretta what usually follows testing and release is a recall. ;f ;a ;f

Depending on the product, that stage of the production is sometimes called FCS, or First Customer Shipment. The state of the product is usually referred to as Gold, but I occassionally heard it called FCS as well.

    Standard development:

    Alpha - nothing works

Beta - stuff works but not as promised

Gamma - don't really see this phase anymore...back when software worked correctly you'd go into this phase which is basically your in house beta testers using it in a production environment

RC - (R)elease (C)andidate. Released to the public to see their reactions and how it works in the real world.

Oops, forgot one intermediate stage in my last post. This is what some jokingly refer to as "Microsoft Release" and some call an "Open Public Beta."

Typically after a beta is completed a release candidate (RC) is created and tested/used for a period of time. Typically it basically means "unless something really bad is found, this is what we will be releasing". "Gold" refers to the actual final released version (build).

Not all RC's are released publicly. Sometimes they are just internal.

Not all the beta versions or RC's are released publically even if there is a public beta version already out there. When I was at Microsoft, they would release beta's to the public (and sometimes privately) but often we would get new internal beta's (sometimes daily) that the public and private beta testers would not get.
