Pepcid AC (generic) is cheap and works on demand, sort of. Irresputably
Try Prilosec OTC. It's also known as Omepresol. Available most everywhere. Shuts off the acid pumps in your stomach or such. Lay off the Coffee/Soda/Chocolate/Hot sauces, etc. for a while.
For heartburn? Gaviscon!
Taking anything OTC other than Prilosec would be ubsurd.
I used to eat that Prilosec OTC like it was candy. It got the job done, but no way it lasts for months like it claims when you've got it bad ... more like 2-3 weeks, tops.
The thing that got rid of my reflux though was losing 55 lbs. Probably not what you want to hear, but that's the best medicine.
Get a prescription for Nexium and be done with it. Helped me out a lot when I was taking it. Then I switched to a no stress job and my acid reflux and the Nexium went away for good. Stress kills.
I've been on this for years. It works but has a 12/24 hour delay time. Good stuff.
Best medicine I found in prescription strength Prevacid daily.
Also for flare ups even while on Prevacid, Gaviscon or Brioschi.
Got me through three years of dealing with acid reflux.
Prescription Protonix is good stuff.
Thanks everyone. I decided to go the holistic route and saw a chiropractor.
He said I have a sublucksation.
Betaine hydrochloride. Acid reflux happens because you have inadequate amounts of acid in your stomach and that prevents the esophagus from closing thereby allowing what acid you do have to reflux up farther than it should go. You also might want to take some other digestive enzymes as well.
By taking the OTC medications, you are further neutralizing what little acid you do have and are then compromising your digestive function even more.
Change your diet and take some BHC. If you want health make the changes. If you want temporary relief that will make you sicker in the long run, take OTC medicines.
