Early 70s in an elk camp atop the Wasatch Mts. in Utah. I'd scored that day with a nice 5x5. The women were serving up backstrap with friend potatoes, onions and some type of vegetable. I'd made the kill with a .270 WCF.
A guy sitting across from me went on and on extolling the virtues of the 7mm Rem. mag as the ultimate elk killer. For those too young to remember when the 7mm RM came out in 63-64 it held sway for about a 20 year period. It was THE big game caliber superstar of it's day. Anyway, after listening to this HS for a time I reached across the table and took the guys plate out from under his nose. "You're right. There's no way this elk can be dead. I'll eat this myself after I finish my plate."
For a second there was dead silence. Then everyone burst out laughing.
