Spent my last 5 years there. I had asked for it because of the controlled tour which kept me from being sent to a remote just before I retired. My easiest assignment was Wheeler AFB 88-92(later AAF) I worked in the "Tunnel". Most fun non-work was King Salmon AK, 82/83 (the natural sights there were awesome). Most interesting TDY (I did 60+) was at Elf One (Saudi Arabia) in 85/86. Easiest workload TDY was to Kwajalein (Oct 88)in the Marshal Islands. We got there, then were not allowed to do anything (higher up brass in DC said so). Wound up to be a 10 day vacation, I was with the Army on a TDY with them, and literally represented the USAF there. Of course there were plenty of non-fun places too, but who wants to hear about those?

A couple of years Korat Thailand loading bombs, rockets, missiles etc. on the F105 aircraft. Then Ubon and Korat Thailand As a gunner on the AC130 gunship. Then Hurlburt field when we closed down Korat. Hurlburt A place I swore I would never come back to. But have been here now for 41 years. But it's where the gunships are at.

Wait, you didn't like Ft. Polk? I have such fond memories of the WWII barracks, the scorpions and snakes. And right outside the gate is (or was) scenic Leesville! What's not to love? :)

Kadena AFB on Okinawa. Steaks every Sunday regardless if a politician was visiting or not. Great sundae bar too.

After my training at Sheppard and then back to Lackland I got orders to Macdill. When it was getting decision time to re-enlist I got new orders at Macdill. I ets'd and joined the GA Air Guard where I retired.

I only got to visit other bases for short periods. When you grow up in GA and FL and every location on your dream sheet is overseas Macdill was a bit of a let down. Especially if there is no end in sight of leaving it.

Best TDY: Rota Spain where the C5 blew 3 engines and we were stuck for 16 days waiting on parts and repair.

A one year TDY at Kirtland convoying. There was no room in the dorms so they put us up in the BAQ with senior enlisted. A/C, color TV with cable, maid service, it was sweet as pie. We could sneak broads in. Two or three times a week the 140's would roll in from Europe with the old stuff and we'd run 'em up to the mountain for storage and dissembly. Usually a 4 to 6 hour day.

Albuquerque was a great town back then. Kind of a college town of maybe 100,000. The area was beautiful with the Sandia mountains in the background. We'd go off into the desert and target shoot and grill steaks. It was just good times.

Bolling AFB 92-95. 89 Med Grp Detachment/11 Med Grp/Dental Sqd

7am-3pm work hours, zero extra duty, plenty of women (officers and enlisted) excellent dining hall, and it was easy to attend college.

One of the guys in my battery jumped off that bridge, drunk. Hit the bottom, scuffed up his face, and had to wait for the MPs to pull him out with a rope, since you can't climb up those walls.
