Just got back from Avatar 3D at the mega movieplex on big screen.
It was okay but didn't do anything for me. I didn't feel excited, scared or anything. There were parts where I thought the special effects were decent but the fact that I was thinking they were special effects the whole time kind of tells you something about the movie.

I was thinking about it and it seems that movies have been lackluster for quite a while. Braveheart was the last one that really got my blood going. There have been a few good movies since then but nothing as exciting.

When leaving the theater opening night of Braveheart, I said to my lady that I believed it was an Oscar contender for Best Picture. I make very few if any such predictions. That was the last one that "blew me away".

But there have been several indie films that have moved me. Marie Full of Grace is one that comes to mind. There are others, but I would need some time to recall them.

Star Wars (the newest one) was the last movie that blew me away, but I haven't seen Avatar yet.

Saving Private Ryan. I saw it in the theater when it came out, in fact it was the last movie I've watched in a theater.

I have seen a lot of excellent movies, but Black Hawk Down really blew me away. Once the shooting started, it never let up.

Man, what those guys went through!

I have to agree that Black Hawk Down was the last movie in recent years that blew me away.
