I like any 308 with 18 or 20 inch high quality 5R rifled barrel / flat-top with a 1 to 2pound trigger and super sharp glass or acog .. I still want a collapseable stock and weight kept to a minimum.

For me it’s a 20” AR15A4 with an Aimpoint PRO red dot. I prefer a rifle length AR with the solid butt, a holdover from my Army days. Also the 20” barrel gets the most out of the 5.56mm round.

I’m playing with the idea of getting a Primary Arms 3X ACSS 3rd generation scope for it. I really like the 3X PA ACSS reticle with the chevron. It would be my poor man’s ACOG.

I think the 14.5" is the shortest I'd ever go for all around. Right now the only AR I have is a DD 16" middy with ff rail. I want a 14.5" carbine m4gery just to have. Maybe also a 11.5 or 12.5 just to try it out.

Depends on what you want and are planning. Home Defense, target shooting, long range target shooting, hunting, Prepper, or just one of those guys that wants everything on your rifle. Each one has a specific need or model. I keep mine simple and specific.

If I had to have a one rifle to do everything I would probably go with

    12.5 inch 6.8 or 6.5 barrel,
Round handguard that will accept rails (I like JP)
Muzzle brake that accepts QD suppressor
    DBAL D-2
    SF scout light
    Unity TAPS for light/laser
EoTech on Gissele riser for passive NV aiming.
    Magpul RVG
    B5 sopmod stock
    BCM gunfighter grip
    Good trigger.

Do pretty much everything I want in an AR from CQB-200 yards. Past 200, I’m going to want a rifle that’s not a GP rifle.

I can kind of see the appeal of short AR's, I even had a nice AR "pistol" for a while, but I finally concluded that the only thing it did better than an actual handgun was I could shoot it more accurately at longer ranges - but not as accurately as a real rifle. Then at really close range (ie: indoors or sub-15 yards or so), I found the weight and size of the AR pistol was both a speed and a maneuverability disadvantage when compared to an actual handgun.

All of which is the backstory to say why I finally decided that if I'm going to have a rifle, I want an actual freaking rifle - 18 to 20 inch barrel, rifle length gas system, etc. My current "The One" is a me-built, with a 15" 2A Armament handguard, Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, Faxon gunner 18" barrel, mounted up to an Aero standard upper on an Aero M4E1 lower, CMMG LPK, Larue MBT2S 2 stage trigger, Aero enhanced buffer tube (has the little 'lips' that fit around the buffer retainer to lock the tube so it can't back out if your castle nut ever comes loose), and topped off with a Bushnell Elite 1.25-4 with a #4 reticle and a red-dot I can turn on for low light. Oh, and some 45 degree fixed BUIS. All in, scope and everything, it's 6.7 pounds, and handles just as fast and easy as any 14.5 or 16 inch gun I ever owned.

    YMMV, IMHO, etc.

I have two. A Colt 6920 with magpul furniture and a BCM 11.5" recce. I prefer the BCM because it's lighter, shorter, and is still pretty accurate out to 300 yards. I think it fills more of the needs I'm looking for rather than a longer barreled AR.

I have a standard 6920 Colt I puta red chevron trijicon on it and sighted it in. This is as close as I could get to an issued rifle. There are better pieces sure, but this ones MINE.

I have the 2.5 it has a dot not the Chevron though. I prefer it vs a red dot with a magnifier.

    For all-around?
Good quality, reliable, carbine of your choice.
    Removable carry handle.
    Bright, white light.
    Sling.
Extra mags and a lot of M-193.
After 1,000 rounds you can decide if you want a RDS or scope, according to your needs; plus you know your weapon.

I owned all the possibly configurations with 16” or longer barrels, optics, etc, and my preferred is a lightweight mid-length with FSB and DD A1.5 rear sight.

I have the most confidence in a rear peep sight. It has small profile making it light, efficient, and durable.

It’s not as fast as a dot sight but it is more accurate at longer distance.
