With the coming election, plus the idea that this is a temporary uptick in demand, firearms manufacturers are probably not wanting to invest in any capital equipment (milling machines, etc). So it may be a while before supplies get back to a reasonable level.

For anyone who want's a crack at building a cheap AK on their own, using backyard tools, here's a starting receiver for you (all the hard works been done).

Remember, that the goatherders can do it for a bag of kebabs, so can you.

That's cheating. To really test your third-world skills, you should start with just a piece of metal roofing.

Exactly a great point. Two extremely different philosophies in the guns. AR - over engineered tack driving .22. AK, a built with rocks minute of chest .30 call.

There are times and places for each. And remember - the conscript army people also had conscript factory workers. Labor can be cheaper than technology.

If the dust cover is closed on an AR it is more resistant to mud for example than an AK.

The original AR15/M16s with 1 in12/14 twists were not particularly accurate. It was in tended to be used on full auto and to tumble upon impact.

It so happened that further iterations of the design resulted in highly accurate rifles. A by product of no piston on the barrel by chance allowed the barrels to be readily free floated. Also the quality of ammo in 5.56 is better.

Use quality ammo in an AK with RDS sighting and headshots at longer ranges like 200 yards may well be possible. Shoot crapy ammo and you will get crappy results.

For a typical civilian the AR is the better rifle.

There was an 89 ban on the chinese guns by bush senior. Some russian guns were banned and stiff rules enacted over parts kits and what configuration of AKs were to be allowed into the USA.
I love my WASR and My MAK90.

True but wasr 's etc. were still very cheap and available in the early 2000's and after the awb sunset. The drastic rise in availability and price came with barrys ban.

I see the WASR10 is still on century's website so it does not appear to have been banned, but the price is several times more than mine was 15 years ago. So again, what did obama ban.

Obama banned Kalashnikov Concern imports, such as the Sega and VEPR rifles and shotguns, but now they are made here by Kalashnikov USA!

The WASR rifles and pistols are made in Romania and have NOT been banned in the US!

Finally some facts. He basically many thing including guns coming from certain Russian companies that included guns. There was question that some asked about wolf labeled ammunition, but I have no problem buying golden tiger brand, wolf brand, and tule branded ammo.

I buy Russian steel case ammunition as well although now it is almost impossible to find and, when you find it, it's three times the price it was 6 months ago!

In the last several months most ammo when you can find it is super expensive. I have a lot of the bimetallic 7.62x39 on hand and from now on plan to obtain boxer primed reloadable brass for some quality accurate loads.

I looked at a Century Arms C39V2 a while back, and about the only thing I didn’t like was the goofy scope mount, not that I’d put optics on it anyway, and the price!

    I LOVE MY C39V2!!!

It is my only milled AK and is reliable and fun to shoot! I've heard all the horror stories about the cast bolt but, as often as I shoot this gun, it's not going to matter. I seriously doubt I will put a thousand rounds through it in my lifetime!

I bought mine in 2015 as a retirement present (along with three or four other guns!) and I paid $699 plus shipping and transfer to my dealer. IMHO, it was money well spent, I am very happy with my C39V2!

I built an A1 style AR with a GI surplus upper, 1/12 twist.
With 55gn M193, it was the most accurate AR I've shot at 100yds.
