"Customers of AT&T wireless may have trouble making 911 calls as a result of service interruptions, company officials said Wednesday evening."

“We are aware of a service issue affecting some calls to 911 for wireless customers, and we’re working to resolve it as quickly as possible,” AT&T officials said in a prepared statement on Wednesday. “We apologize for this inconvenience.” . . .

"The issue’s been fixed. But the 911 service disruption is a warning to us all: the police may not be able to respond to your 911 call before, during or after a DGU. You may be on your own."

At least locally some of the television stations provided ten digit telephone numbers for local police agencies.

Anecdotal of course, but here police somehow managed to respond to shootings in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, other tropical storms, and during any of several civil disturbances over the years. The police often may not be able to respond within the seconds necessary to prevent a violent felony, but my guess is under most circumstances of someone being shot, whether justified or not, there will be a police response and investigation.

The warning is the idiots in charge of the warning system sent alerts to Verizon phones for an AT&T problem, why do I care if an AT&T person can't call 911?? We were in a resturant and everyone's phone went off at once.... Stupid.

In most disasters emergency response is the first to fail as it is quickly overloaded and is often hindered by whatever caused the disaster. Emergency services, electrical power and communication will fail. You will have to rely on yourself for at least short term survival and as I have stated previously transportation and fuel rank right up there with food and ammo. We get little reminders such as this occasionally of what will someday be a reality it's just a question of what and when.

A gun in the hand is always better than a cop on the phone. Because when seconds mean the difference between life and death the police are minutes away.

Folks joke about phone books. Thing is they work when battery, service of smart phones do not.

I dumped my landline. It seldom failed. But didn't use it

Land lines fail more often all it takes is a tree falling on a line or someone hitting a poll.

So call the non-emergency number if you can't call the emergency number, they'll still be able to get you help.

All I'll have to do is dial 311 instead of 911.

We kept our landline number - but it is based on cellular service now.

IIRC it costs us $10 a month + tax for this service - but the first year we had to pay $25 + tax which was almost the same as what a landline cost.

I assume if 911 was down for cellular - my "home phone" would not be able to call 911.

BTW - if you can't call 911 - who do you call to come pick up the dead body of a burglar / home invader that you caught inside your home?
