Killer Bees: Big story in '90s. I actually thought I could be stung and therefore be dead at any moment. That's also when I believed that news stations reported the news.

Haunta Virus: Also from the '90s. I was helping an older gentleman with household chores, one of which was moving his wood pile. I said as a joke that I didn't want to because mice lived in it and we'd get haunta virus. "It's always been around," he said, "It's just in the news right now. Next year it will be something else." It made sense, I didn't realize at the time how right he was.

    The other ones I remember:

    Swine flu
    Global warming
    Tomatoes
    Comets

But oddly, despite a yearly catastrophe bent on killing us all, most of us are still here.

Global Cooling. It along with Global Warming are inventions of research scientists so they would no longer have to fight for research grants.

Late stages of the cold war. Anyone remember "duck and cover?" As if ducking under my desk in 3rd grade would protect me from a nuclear explosion. They had us kids scared to death.

I distinctly remember my 6th grade science text book stating the world would run out of Oil in the early 2000's.
