Gun season just opened. I loaded up a new load for the ol’ Marlin .30-30.

160g Hornady LeverEvolution with 30.5g BLC2. Chrono’s at 1960 FPS. Got a Marlin 336 with a fixed power Leupold 2.5x

It’s a good little setup for a climbing stand in the woods.

I’m hunting this guy hard. Too bad he’s only on camera at night. They don’t rut in my area until late January into early February so I guess I’m hunting some meat early in the season.

I think my light load will be perfect for deer inside of 100 yards.

I’ve got a .270 Win load that I can use for longer distance if needed. It’s the classic 59g of 4831 with 130g JSP. It’s. Pretty hot load.

I have enough loaded for my 284 Winchester. As luck & work schedules would dictate, I think it will be an all muzzle-loader deer season. I just got back from IL, one coyote & a small 10 pointer.

I think I’ll make it to MI for the early Dec M-L hunt. My Knight ‘Elite’ with a Zeiss 3-9 is no slouch with effectiveness. I have the 45 cal & 50, usually 115 grains of B209 & an XTP or Barnes bullet.

As to the loading bench, I never have to many all around 115 grn plated RN for the 9mm. I have plenty of Titegroup to use.

180 grain Partitions with IMR4350 for the .30-06 back up elk and deer rifle and 140 Berger VLD/hunting with H4831 for the .270 Deer gun. They were loaded a couple years ago though.

This season, either some .35 Rem, 200gr Speer pushed by 37-gr of IMR-4895 coming in at around 2k fps or some factory 200-gr Federal SP.

7mm-08 42.5 grains IMR 4895 130 grain Speer Hot-Cor
Easy on the shoulder, but not on game.
I had some surprisingly good loads in .270 with 4895 and 4064.

The problem I’ve had with .270 is making an accurate reduced load. My gun doesn’t like them, and by the time I’ve worked up to an accurate load I’m within 100fps of factory ammo.

My .223 shoots great at 2500-2600fps but this little .270 just ain’t havin’ it.

.270 Win 58 gr R22 and 140 grain Nosler Accubond...a hair over 3,000 FPS and has flattened two does this season so far. Passed up about 20 4,6 and 8 pointers--all basket racks so far. Had one opportunity at a 160+ class deer but he was running after does as fast as he could the few times I've seen him.

I love my Roy but I run it exclusively with 200 gr Accubonds... For everything including deer.
Load 180 ABs for a friend's .300 Wins. Great performance on game, and accurate.

Can't find 200 gr ABs now, but have 200 gr partitions. From two 700 Roys get 2950 fps w/7828 and decent accuracy: 1-1.25" for 5 at 100 yds.

Both guns do 1/2-3/4" with the TTSX. Have yet to kill something with one tho.

I’ve been a dedicated handgun hunter for the last 25+ years.

I used a scoped Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Magnum for a lot of those years. For about the last 10 years I’ve been using a scoped T/C Contender in 7-30 Waters. My pet load is 139gr Hornady SST over Varget. Love this handgun. Have taken several deer with it.

My alternate is a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum. I had to add a Burris Fastfire 3 the last couple of years because it’s been getting harder and harder to cleanly see the front sight. Favorite load is 240gr Hornady XTP over H110.

Because of some medical issues, I can’t hunt the big, deep woods of PA like I normally would be doing on Saturday. A buddy of mine invited me to hunt from his property so I only have a short walk from the truck to get to the stand. I’m thinking I’ll be using the SBH. Have it dialed in at 50 yards….longest shot looks to be about 75 yards.

good luck to you. Getting a clean kill with a handgun is very rewarding. One of my favorite hunts I killed a mature whitetail with a model 66 in .357 magnum.

I had just about given up on the 300blk and my 8.5” one is lighter than my 458socom and 450 BM rifles, at least when all Have cans on them.

The Barns tac-Tx was suggested to me before I gave up.

Loaded it to just under 2100 @ 50 yards (most of my shots are 30-80).

They work quite well, most not taking a single step after impact. There is still some bleeding out but at least it’s not on the run like other projectiles I have tried, at least in the reduced velocity the 300 blk has.

Good luck Steve! I will be out there Saturday too with my Savage 99.

I've hunted on my friends farm for ~ 40 years. Used to be great. But it borders some public hunting ground that gets pounded. With the increased # of tags last 10 years, the deer populaton in the area is way low.

Still, the tradition runs deep here. So I still go with my friend & my brother.
