Better feeding and chambering, slips through cover/layers of clothing a little better. I've carried fmj around lots of times. Sometimes I wonder if a hole on one side and out the other might be the ticket. I always wondered if that "Hague Convention" stuff about using fmj only was the real reason or not. If it's all you got left, go ahead and load it in there. Better than nothing.

I guess the way I see it, there are so many better options in just about every application, I can't think of why, except, no other choice. FMJ's have so many marginal attributes, they go through flesh in a very streamlined manner (mostly leaving a smaller than caliber hole in their wake). They tend to steer very weird courses. Sometimes that trait can be fortuitous (Jack Ruby comes to mind), sometimes less than desirable. In any case, the shooter has less control over where it is going to end up than just about any other option.
Yes I meant compared to the other FMJ calibers.

In any event if someone is hung up on non expanding bullets for SD there is the option of using the XP and XD rounds from Underwood. Not sure if they match modern expanding bullets but I am sure they're much better than FMJ for SD.

.380 JHP from a pocket gun often doesn't have enough velocity to expand. Hardball penetrates well and feeds better.
If a jhp doesn't expand it penetrates just like hardball.

As long a jhp feeds reliably in your gun there is no reason not to carry it, unless it is illegal in your jurisdiction.

Trust? For what exactly?
He said trust in the context of being an adequate self-defense round.

I'm a little counter-culture on this one, because I think that virtually all calibers in FMJ would alter someone's behavior. When the Israeli Defense Force was employing .22 in the leg (Ruger 10/22) as a crowd control mechanism, they had a surprising number of "inadvertent" fatalities and stopped using that gun in that application.

For a number of years after 2001, possibly more than five years, the IDF stopped using the Ruger 10/22 after a number of protesters were killed with the rifle.

Granted, we are talking about a rifle. But its still a 22.

Smaller calibers are suboptimal for self-defense, as are larger calibers. But I hold to the view that any of them are capable of making a bad person behave.

Ruger SR-22.

Thousands and thousands of dead folks pass through the morgue with FMJ target ammo being the last thing to pass through their minds. I trust it to penetrate and hit a vital organ or spine more so than the Federal HST I have loaded in the G26 and LCP.

I am not sure which of 3 different things you "might" be talking about. Could you be a little more specific in your question

My LE son tells me all the guns he takes off people are loaded with FMJ with exception of stolen guns loaded with HP at time they were stolen.

The big advantage of .45 ACP is that it's still fairly effective as a FMJ round.

Since I have lots of JHP on hand, I prefer .40 to .45.

I'm actually of the opinion that .45 ACP gets too much expansion when using a JHP, resulting in only 11" - 13" of penetration. I prefer rounds that get at least 16" of penetration in gel, since actual penetration will be significantly less than gel.

But if FMJ were my only option, I would definitely go the .45 route.
