We had some record stores that were really good at finding the soon to be "up and comers" back in the '80s.

That and one of my friends dad was tight with Doc McGee

As a teen i'd say The Ramones and April Wine. I liked both bands before our local FM stations starting playing their stuff. We’d call the local college radio station and request songs like “I want to be sedated” or “ I like to rock” as the “big” stations here would refuse any requests that were not top 40 crap.

Green Day. They played in my friends living room at a college party. Maybe 25 of us there total.

Didn’t follow them much afterwards, but I call that the ground floor.

The Beastie Boys. Before their debut album Licensed To Ill came out in 1983 the song Paul Revere was released in very limited quantities in only a few markets.

I got about a 6th or 7th generation copy of it from a friend who got it from a friend who got it from their older brothers friends cousin etc etc.

The sound quality was crap after so many copies of copies but I knew this was going to be big.

Def Leppard. Heard them on a late night Sunday radio program hosting new talent probably around 1979-1980. I knew they were going places.

Pantera. They were local and played hair metal covers before they found the heavier sound they were known for. Super nice guys as well. Everyone that lives here has a Vinnie Paul/Darrell story or seven.

I saw ZZ Top at the Pensacola, FL municipal auditorium in 1972 right after Rio Grande Mud came out. My friends and I managed to get right up to the stage about 10 feet from Billy Gibbons, who was just a kid then. He was playing a cigar box shaped guitar.

Boston. Brad Delp, the late singer lived around the corner, after high school we worked together in a factory. Brad talked about how their band was coming along. The girls in his songs (Mary-Anne and ?) were my sisters freinds. Nicest guy, very talented, had it all and depression got him.

The Genitorturers. Well, I guess they never got that big, but they have made a career of it since the early 1980's. I was acquainted with Gen (Jen Zimmerman) when she was a radio DJ at Rollins College (Winter Park, FL) and the band was called The Festering Genitorturers. Right before I moved from Florida to Kentucky, I took my little brother, who had always lived in the country, over to Jen's house to watch them practice - wasn't really his sort of thing.
