I'm in NW Oregon. I buy Federal American Eagle 55gr 5.56 for $.30/round ($6 a box of 20) when on sale locally - $.37/round when it is not. I also buy Tula, (which I like ), for $.24/round delivered (advertised price is $.20/round before shipping). I am not aware of any distributors within pickup distance.

The Federal Rebate was the best deal going last year that I found for XM193. $4.99/20 after rebate, free ship from PSA. Bought a 1000. If I had the money I'd have maxed out the $400/household limit. Otherwise, PSA is $5.99 all day long with free shipping.

Thanks for the tip about PSA and free shipping! Funny, their price on Federal is great, but their price on Tula is terrible .

IMI I paid 28.1 cent a round for 55gr fmj but also bought 500 rounds of imi smk 77gr that are 66cent . Costly but very accurate . Just had to try some .

Wolf gold 55fmj was 26.4

All were bought on holidays with no shipping changes and still have a few thousand rounds

The pendulum has swung the other way over this past year. Many of the online dealers have periodic "free shipping" deals. Buy as much as you can afford or (hide from your wife!)

I'm just starting to ramp up reloading. I've cast/powder coated over 4000 rounds of various calibers. So far 124 SWC for 9mm, 158 SWC for 357/38 spec, and 230 round nose for .45. I also cast around 100 1oz slugs for 12ga.

In the mean time, I use SGAmmo.com and Targetsports, which is currently offering free shipping on selected calibers/brands.

I'm paying $4.78 for the box of 20 Tula Ammo from my local Wal-mart. That is about .23 cents per round. It becomes cheaper when you buy the whole case, but I can't bring myself to spend that amount of money in one sitting. I rather do the ant trail method.

I have been loading my own 5.56 rounds using lake city brass. I use cfe223 powder, cci #400 small rifle primers, and 55 or 64 grain FMJBT projectiles, so my per round price is around 23 cents a round, but I am getting great ammo that performs great in my rifle.

Reloading is not for everyone, but it can be worth your time.

I prefer shooting handguns, so I'm not a high volume user of .223/5.56. One or two thirty round magazines per range trip will satisfy my interest. I'm getting American Eagle .223 for $6.99 and 5.56 for 7.99 per box of 20. Sometimes as low as $5.99 on sale for either. I don't use steel cased ammo at all.

Wally World Tula ($4.78/20rds OR 0.24 per rd) is pretty cheap, always fires and is very accessible these days. Keep about 500rds on hand, though I have a "spam can" under the bed.

Cheap fun

Unless you're trying to support your LGS, there are plenty of online sources with free shipping. With continuous sales, no way you should be paying more than $0.30/rd for brass: AE, Wolf Gold, PMC, Fiocchi, etc.

I went into Walmart - nothing on the shelf but price is $4.78. Asked the assistant manager and he said they're getting 13 in tonight. I said "13 cases"? He said , "13 boxes". I told him I wanted 10 boxes and that 13 boxes on the shelf isnt enough. He said it does go fast.

I don't think he understood.
