    I can't figure out why my father had these. While not rabidly anti-gun, never was a hunter or shooter.

    Don't worry, those were never used by hunters or shooters. Just an interesting footnote in failed fiream design.

    Saw my first one in the 60's in my father's pawn/gun shop. Should have had him put it back for me until I was legal.

    they look like Gyrojet projectiles as has already been mentioned. They may be worth a few bucks to a Gyrojet collector but not worth as much as a round that was intact or if they had some kind of documentation to go with them concerning where they were fired and what caused them to be deformed like that.
