Im thinking my next pistol will be a 1911. Something in the compact range, around the size of the Colt Defender. I like the short barrel for CCW. And def a .45, no 9mm/.40/.380.

So, along with the defender what are my options in the $900 and less price range? Im not real familiar with whats out there, and Ill assume at that price point there not a lot of options.

short 1911 are notroious for functional problems. they are hard to get to run right but if you insist on a compact I'd go with the Colt or perhaps the sig. Don't like foreign 1911's myself(SA, RIA) and kimber has a spotty rep for qc.

    Kimber Ultra CarryII
    Springfield Ultra Compact
    Springfield Micro Compact

    Roughly $100 over that budget:

    Colt Talo CCO
    STI Shadow

I also wouldnt put much weight to statements like this, this seems to be repeated over and over and over, and its source im certain is from long ago.

Countless people have "short" 1911's that work great, those repeating the naysay short 1911 crap dont have them and are generally just repeating what "they say"

I am sure glad that I have never took this statement seriously. I have had 2 cheap Rock Islands that have never failed in countless rounds that I had put through them. I think others here would say the same.
here is a pic of the said Rock Island

I picked up this American Tactical Imports Titan for $435.00, the quality is amazing and it shoots great.
I like this little Titan just as much as my more expensive 1911's.

I have both a Colt Defender and Kimber Ultra Carry.

    No issues with either.

I've had great luck with my Kimber Ultra. My 3.5" RIA, is a great shooter and has been very reliable, but it's a steel framed gun, and is heavier than I would like for CC with a gun that size.

It's basically a Colt Defender clone, I just put a Defender recoil spring setup in mine.

Like others have said, nothing wrong with shorter 1911's.

Here's my SA Ultra Compact that has been flawless. It's in rotation for EDC.

As well as being accurate and reliable, the little guns can look good too. :)
