I hear people constantly talking about how certain animals will not attack but isn't a wild animal just that, wild and unpredictable. I want to start fishing in the PA mountain area this year and just don't know crap about wild animals.

Nothing to worry about in PA, save for some snakes. I have heard tell about mountain lions recently from different people but even if they are here, their numbers have to be low making chances at a run in slim.

Is there any poisonous snakes in the PA mountains?

Sure are a few poisonous snakes. I'm up in Freeland, just outside Hazleton. Come on up and we'll hit up a local stream. It would be about a two hour ride from Philly.

I'll admit I'm no angler, but like to fish.

I'm no snake expert, so I just assume yes, if you do that you can't go wrong (treat every gun as if it is loaded kind of thing).

Like anywhere else in the world, when you are alone out in the woods just watch where you step and you will be fine. I've been bouncing around the mountains here for a long, long time and have not had a problem with snakes. Almost got bit last year by a copperhead but even then, I woulda have been in pain but I would have been fine because i'm prepared for such events.

I have never once had to shoot a snake, not even the one that damn near bit me. I don't particularly care for em but I have a truce with em.

Man are you on a tear with the Animal Thread.

Been wandering the PA wood most of my life. Honestly, nothing cool and dangerous messed with me yet. Black Bears are scary but usually they take off before you notice them.

Snakes, just don't step on one or play with them if you are not sure if its poisonous.

The only thing you got to worrty about is ticks and poison Ivy

Other then that you will be fine. The PA woods and mountains is like the Easy setting on a wilderness video game. There is no Mountain Lions, or Grizzly bears here. You got to be stupid, and have a steak tied to your waist to get attacked by something in PA.

Skunks , if one comes around pick up and move.
Years ago , a bunch of my tough biker buddies all came up to camp chill and party a little. We'd gotten a lamb to roast on the spit and this skunk decided to invite himself .

I had no idea how mean and nasty a skunk could be . You can't shoot him cause he will stink you out.We all these tough guys around , me included , and nobody knew what to do ?

I walked up to the spit and cut part of the front leg off the lamb
and the skunk took it and left.

That damn skunk had backed off 11 tough guys.

That reminds me, the only time I have ever feared for my life in the woods in PA was deer season. Bubba is out in force, and he is going to shoot his gun whether he sees a deer or not.

    Animals are not that unpredictable.

Don't provoke them. Keep your food sealed off. Don't try to pet their cubs.

In general, animals are more afraid of you than you are of them. The only animals I'd really be worried about are the two-legged kind.

That, and ticks. I hate ticks.

I'm more worried about people than anything, I go bowhunting from october to january every year and i'm always in the woods around 4 am to get to my stand. Never had a problem with animals! I did watch that movie jeepers creepers the night before i went hunting once. I won't do that again!

Like someone already mentioned when it comes to bears they know you're coming long before you get there and 99.9% of the time they'll take off and you'll never even know they were there.

Other humans are the only real threat possibility besides reptiles, and even snakes will usually get out of your way before you see them.

Been run out of a campsite by a skunk. As a previous poster has stated, your options are limited.

I respect the skunk, but don't fear him. I fear the 2 legged predators, and keep alert for them.
