Ever notice that more than half of the movies about WWII German's involve at least one dude that's REALLY a conspiracy theorist waiting for some invasion deep inside Germany at the height of German penetration in the war??

Inglorious Basterds had at least TWO of them.

Are Germans really that suspicious??? If not, why is it the cliche of almost all WWII movies???

    Nope. Can't say I have.

Got any other examples? Haven't seen Inglourious Basterds (or however it was they decided to spell it) yet.

I'd imagine so, at least if they wanted to survive the war. In the case of Inglorious Basterds, they were occupying a relatively hostile country. Well, hostile once the tide turned for the allies. You not only have the Maquis to worry about, you also have SOE and OSS teams running around the country. Granted, there probably wasn't all that many, numerically. But, after a few publicized attacks, I think you'd be watching your back as well.

I recall that German Officers were able to catch more than a few downed airmen and allied agents due to their boots. Apparently good boots were hard to come by in occupied France, and most civilian's were well worn by 42-43. So an observant German could easily pick out someone wearing a newer set of boots and pull them aside for questioning.

I agree about the portrayal in movies. The SS guy in Where Eagles Dare is another who was portrayed like that.

Who knows if they were, but I wouldn't doubt the Gestapo types were. As for regular officers, I would think their job and areas would have a lot to do with it. I wouldn't think an infantry officer on leave in Berlin would be like that. But I would think a Gestapo type in France or other occupied areas would.

    It's an interesting question though.

The look on his face, when Brad Pitt's character asked him if he was going to take that uniform off when he got to Nantucket was hilarious. He had said in another scenes that he interviewed the survivors with the tatoo......

Some movie content is realistic but you need to research other material to get the real gist of things
One decent book if your interested is The Gestapo-A History of Horror

If you want REAL suspicion-Study Russian history:whistling:

Yes, some German officers were VERY superstitious and others believed in conspiracies.

If you look at society in general there are conspiracy theories everywhere. Suspicion is a normal thing if you want to survive.

It just seems they are portrayed as the most paranoid race on the planet.

I mean, look at the Guns of Navarone. Fortified fortress. Guy finds something and they almost don't blow it up. C'mon.

I understand there needs to be plot suspense, but it just seems like no one gets to walk in and dupe them yet every modern movie begins with some terrorist walking into something of ours and blowing it to smithereens and we didn't even notice.

And, uhh, is "race" really the word you meant to use right there? Kind of agreeing with 'em, aren't'cha? :whistling:
