Epitaph To a Dog
Near this spot
Are deposited the Remains
Who possessed Beauty
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man
Without his Vices.
The Price, which would be unmeaning flattery
If inscribed over Human Ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of
Boatswain, a Dog
Who was born at Newfoundland,
And died in Newstead Abbey,
Nov. 18, 1808.
When some proud son of man returns to earth,
Unknown by glory, but upheld by birth,
The sculptors art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And stories urns record that rests below.
When all is done, upon the tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his masters own,
Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit!
By nature vile, ennoble but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn,
Pass on it honors none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friends remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one and here he lies.
Lord Byrons tribute to Boatswain, on a monument in the garden of Newstead Abbey.
Tears me up everytime I read it.

I am very excited about the opening of the pet forum! I look forward to the many pictures and stories of our furry little friends.
Taking a break with Ranger. He's been in training for a few weeks now and he's really making progress. I can't believe how lucky were are to have him. What a prize.
Excellent pics everyone.........
I plan to get some pics of the new cat with no flash because he closes his eyes each time, so I can hardly get any of him.........
Glad we have this forum now..........
Thanks Patricia for getting it open for us, and I think it will be one of the most popular.........;c

After about my third try, Missy looks at me with the worst glare...then her eyes turn reddish in photos. Talk about looking ill! I always wondered if it wasn't because she opens them so wide to glare?
Lisa hmmm....nice dog. BTW if we will be both single I will ask you for a date ;P
Here's Claus, patiently waiting for his new little buddy.
I hope he makes it long enough to see him. He is 11 1/2 years old and has mast cell tumors all over his skin. He is eating less everyday and constantly panting. He has trouble on walks (arthritis), but doesn't seem to be in pain from any of his ailments. His little nubby tail is always wagging, and he's very alert.
THe only time he really perks up is around other dogs. That is one reason I decided to get a pup now rather than wait until after my heart breaks again (lost his mom 2 years ago).
