After 14 years and 7 days I was laid off.

    That is all. Carry on.

Or perhaps I should look for another job? Yeah I should probably do that.

Damn dude, that really sucks. I hope that you land on your feet. And, you should spend less time on here than ever. Your new full-time gig is finding a job. Are you or can you be mobile? There is work out there if you can move.

    Good luck.

    Sucks.

Definitely look for another job. You have an obligation to yourself, screw them.

I was told by my company that I had little dedication. I told the VP I had as much dedication to the company as it had to me.

He asked what that was, and I told him 30 minutes. That's their policy for the length of time they are required to give me notice, to my being escorted out the door.

I worked their almost 40 years. I still wonder how? I think it was their way to punish me, by keeping me.

If I had to move I guess I could, but I pretty much need to stay within 3-4 hours of Cleveland for my wife's medical specialists.

I am getting my networking on as we speak. I worked in the toy industry long enough I hope there is someone out there that can help me out, even if its just with part time or contract stuff.

My boss wants to bring me back in a few months if things get better, but the way it is now, why go back. I know the company's finances are terrible and he doesn't have a solid plan to rebuild it.

Sorry to hear about your situation Janice. I was the company's longest lasting employee, I had been through the thick and thin of it all, and I know my boss didn't want to do it deep down. Money wise he's toast, I just expected him to shut the place down, before just laying me off.

Get started looking immediately, and all the best of luck to you. You were laid off, apply for unemployment ASAP.

Yeah that was the first thing I did after getting home and telling my wife. I still have another paycheck and 85 hours of vacation pay due to me, so hopefully unemployment will kick in by then.

Sounds like you and the boss were and are on good terms. Even if he would like to hire you back if he can afford it later, he has to know that you have a responsibility to yourself and your family to try to find another job as fast as you can.

Seems to me that a letter of recommendation extolling your work ethic, strengths and accomplishments would be a nifty thing to include along with your resume as you look for a position.

Might the boss be agreeable to creating such a letter or signing off on one you create?

    Good luck, and move fast.

yeah I kept my cool. He would sign a letter I am sure, and I already sent off an application on a long shot, but would be a wonderful pay bump, just a long hiring process if I am even considered.

buddy of mine is hiring me to help him mow yards, so I start that tomorrow morning actually. just doing it to build up some extra cash for after my owed paychecks and vacation pay runs out.

Few companies, if any anymore actually pay severance. That is stated in company handbooks.

Well, you're gonna get your un-employment, so you'll have that too.

Best of luck, and definitely consider moving. I moved from the mid-west to Arlington, for work, and work has been great.

What, you mean you don't get your check from posting on GT? I mean, um, er, nevermind. :)

Sorry to hear about the layoff. You know what they say, the best way to get over one is to get under another one. Or is that women...either way...

 company handbook? We didn't need no stinking handbook.

And yes, I'll have my unemployment too.
