Court sniffs at ex-NYC officer's claim of wife sabotaging drug test with pot-spiked meatballs

    Associated Press
    Last update: February 4, 2010 - 8:07 PM

NEW YORK - A former New York City counterterrorism detective who says he was unfairly fired as a result of a failed drug test he blamed on his wife's marijuana-spiked meatballs has lost a court bid to get his job back.

A state appeals court upheld Anthony Chiofalo's (chuh-FAH'-loh's) dismissal Thursday. The 22-year veteran was suspended in 2005 after failing a random drug test and was fired in 2007.

Catherine Chiofalo told police investigators she secretly substituted marijuana for oregano in meatballs, hoping a failed test would make her husband leave police work.

Anthony Chiofalo's lawyer, Philip Karasyk (CAH'-rah-sihk), says he's considering options for continuing the case.

Police department lawyer Edward Hart says there was more marijuana in Chiofalo's system than the meatballs could explain.

So I was thinking of my serious reply while reading, and it got thrown off at the end by the one guy saying how much was in his system. Not too sure how accurate that could be, she could have been spiking his food for awhile, or maybe she put a bunch in and he fell asleep.

Hair testing would be more likely to tell the full picture of how much he's done over a period of time. He probably has a buzz cut so that won't help. Other body hair may be an option. I think it has to be long though.

    Also: It's just weed.

I'm sure the official investigation has a lot more info than the blurb we're getting here.

Are we to believe that there's any Mrs. Cop anywhere who did not know this? Methinks she had nothing to do with this except trying to cover for him. HH

He's a cop and he doesn't know the difference between oregano and marijuana? If he doesn't know how pot smells then he shouldn't be a cop. If he doesn't know how oregano tastes then he should be in a special needs mental facility. Even a small amount of pot tastes bitter and nothing like oregano. And the two smell nothing alike. Don't ask me how I know. :whistling: Not to mention, where is his wife getting pot? Yeah, this guy is just a victim. The firing seems a bit harsh though, perhaps they fired him for having such a lame excuse for failing the drug test? Yeah, that's probably it.

OR................he could have been smoking pot and just got caught.

It was a "random" test after all. I'm sure he wasn't expecting it.

With all the sorry excuses a guy with this kind of time must have heard on the street, this was the best he could come up with? HH

First I must say, they probably are both pot smokers. Is oregano only for the topping? I don't cook or eat Italian food at all (usually) so I don't know.

Oh no, marijuana, the most harmful, life-taking drug known to man. SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!
After 22 years they should cut this guy a break. You're a helluva lot more likely to do something bad drinking alcohol than mary jane.
All I did when I used to get high back in high school (LOL) was eat and laugh a lot.
