I'll be taking a car trip out of state in a few months and would like to take my pistol with me for range visits for the few weeks I'm gone.

My question is simple. Is it legal or are there any other roadblocks keeping me from being able to transport my pistol in my vehicle throughout this great country of ours? I do not have my ccw yet.

I understand I would need to ensure the weapon is in a secure location in the vehicle out of my reach and not loaded. Trunk it.

18 USC 926A permits you to take a firearm from place A to place B assuming you are permitted to have the firearms in both places A and B "if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle."

I don't know if this will solve your problem because if it is illegal to possess the pistol at one of your destinations, the protections of 18 USC 926A probably don't apply. You may be stuck researching the laws in each location that you will be visiting.

    Where are you going?

There are some places where although legal, I wouldn't transport through there.

I'll be going through Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, and finally North Carolina as my destination.
