A friend of mine sent me this, very interesting. Do a Google search for "XXX new cases" where "XXX" is any 3-digit number and you will get new virus cases somewhere. Try it with different numbers. It works every time.

Yup...rather strange how all the possibilities are covered. Well, at least the 4 numbers I tried.

But by title thread, I thought maybe "Ralph" was gonna' finally fess up.

To play (D)evil’s advocate, given thousands of towns, counties, etc., there is a good chance any 3-digit number will be a number of new cases in one of them. Add the time dimension and a 4-digit number won’t be surprising at all.

Without addressing the scam or no scam issue in general, I'm not sure this is a thing.

With 50 states and 3243 counties in the USA (ETA - don't forget every large municipality that also reports their case counts) and triple digit case counts beginning already in mid March, that means we've had news reports listing "xxx new cases" for up to 100 different days multiplied by all those thousands of different locations. Even without running the math, I think the odds of any number having already occurred somewhere in the USA since March is pretty good.

The news report of [pick your number] new cases from whenever & wherever is still floating around the web waiting to be Binged. (I give Google as little use/info as possible).

(Edit 2: i somehow missed Jim Willson's post which beat me to it.)

Yeah, we are being rope-a-doped with this til some other farce appears. Nobody can prove or disprove, come up with anything concrete, or change the story on it. It's just a big lie with nobody having to actually lie. I wish some elder in the Congress would just shut it off for a minute and find one solid immutable fact and go from there. It may not be totally intentional, just noone wants shake status quo. C'mon, leaders- be one for a change!

You are correct. The OP is grasping at conspiracy straws. It isn't a scam, it's probability. You've got 50 states and hundreds of municipalities reporting numbers, often daily, over weeks or months of time. Not at all surprising every three-digit number will pop up somewhere, sometime.

Apparently, the Diva extraordinaire is not a Statistician extraordinaire.

I'm surprised and saddened that this needs to be explained.

Pretty much common sense, if you ask me...

Why can’t it be a 4 digit number!? Did the scammers not have enough time?

There are 120+ days across tens of thousands of counties, towns, various countries etc. they all each have multiple news outlets. Multiply that by the fact nursing homes hospitals etc are all added to this. That means pulling from millions of possible outcomes of course you’ll get results for 999 possibilities.
