Now I am no scientist but when a scientific article like the one posted uses a Vulcan Command ship as its reference I am starting off a little skeptical. Maybe some of the more intelligent GT's can convince me to give this article some credibility.

I think we'll eventually have some sort of faster-than-light spacecraft. Most likely they will be invented approximately one week after I'm dead, and coincidentally that's when they will also invent mind transference into a computer and then back into a blank clone of a younger you.

They really are working on this. It's just a really dumbed-down article.

Are you a young person? I swear in my teens I new it for a fact that by the time I was 30 or 40 science and medicine would have stopped aging and life ending illness. Well I am 45 now and surprise the hell out of me I am still getting older. Kind of a disappointment really. I had such high hopes for Doctors and scientists.

Worst - he was born 10 years AFTER you. Medical science is working in REVERSE!!!!!????!!!!!! ZOMG!!!!!!!!

Warp drive. LOL What about space debris? That'd put more than a ding in your windshield.

This idea was first floated almost 20 years ago; the recent refinement is a tweak to the equations that reduces the amount of energy minimally required from "ridiculous" to merely "implausible."

We have no idea how to do this. None. The equations say "if spacetime could be warped like this, it would take this much energy and the enclosed bubble would go this fast."

No one has any idea how to warp spacetime.

Party pooper. We had several members dusting off their Star Trek uniforms and you had to crap all over their parade.

(Think about it - how much $ and work to send a man to the moon? How about an unmanned probe to Mars? You think it's economically feasible to send ANYTHING via warp drive to Alpha Centauri???)

Thanks for being a voice of reason. I saw the thread title and all I could think was..."Not this ish again..."

Eh, who cares. My wife just called from Wally World and informed me they had two 250 round boxes of 115 grain Federal 9mm ammo for $52/box. I said "BUY!" I may not be able to warp space-time but I can punch some holes in it.

That's great, but they really need to invent deflector technology along with FTL drive. I hate to be cruising along and have micro meteors punching holes in my hull all the way.

I think we'll master the slower-than-light-speed phaser before we master faster-than-light-speed warp travel. LOL

The way I understand warp drives, in operation you wouldn't have to worry about space debris punching holes at fantastic speeds, just normal space junk speeds. The ship and the surrounding space experiences no acceleration. As the warp bubble propagated through space, it would engage a particle of dust and it would be propelled along the leading edge of the warp bubble, since it had mass.

At least that's the way it works in my mind.

Now it would be great to have some sort of force field technology that could deflect space debris in general. One recent article I read about what it would be like to travel faster than light is that the stellar radiation (starlight) would be doppler shifted into and even past the X-Ray spectrum. The pressure of this radiation would really bear down on the warp drive, and the ship itself would need to shield the passengers from intense X-Ray/Gamma radiation.

Oh, and my wife's latest ammo score! It was actually $57/box though.
