Dont be afraid to mess it up. You can sand it down and start over, I use a wet drywall sanding sponge. You can experiment with all kinds of stuff, I've used Dr. pepper, bbq sauce, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, lemons. Here's one I did with mustard.

Would the tenacious blade take a patina?

I was opening a bottle of cold blue once with my Tenacious and the tip is still stained to this day.

So I would imagine that something will patina that steel.

I use mustard on 1095 carbon steel knives and then after a bit, cut into apples. Forces a nice patina. Not sure that is enough for a Tenacious though.
