Maybe it's left over from one of Marfione's early secret operations.

    Probably the wife's fault.

" George, i don't want the standard garden gnome in the garden. Put something out there that will really POP."

I'm going to guess he dug it up metal detecting, thought it was cool, and wanted to put it on the coffee table in the living room but his wife made him leave it outside.

A friend of mine and co worker had the chance to legally acquire the outer shell of a W80 nuclear cruise warhead. Don't remember all the details, probably a laboratory test item, not radioactive of course. He didn't take it. Wish he had told me, I'd have taken the offer in a flash. Don

That area of Florida is flooded with inert shells. Every pawn shop and souvenir store has them. Mostly blue ones. :)

In the late 50's I cause quite a stir at the gate, in Charleston, SC Minecraft base. I had scrounged a nice wooden crate with hinged lid and hasp from the Navy Yard dump, and put it in my car trunk to take home and store stuff in.

At the gate, I was pulled out for search that day. The couple of guards looked into the car then told me to open the trunk. When the trunk popped open, there was a wooden gray painted crate, stamped "MK (I forget what size) Grenades!

Everybody backed up a ways, and with guns drawn, (I doubt they had any ammunition, it was the Navy after all) I was ordered to "Open the crate!".

I opened the empty crate, and had a chuckle. The guards were peed off for being scared of nothing.

They told my to go through. It was a nicely constructed crate, I kept it for years.

Just wait until they start cleaning up Tyndall. No big secret, had a pretty extensive R&D test range there and bet there are going to loads of EOD folks busy as beavers for the next 6 months.

I had one as a toy box when I was a kid my dad had scrounged the same way. He had a couple in the garage that held all the cleaning stuff, every time we had to move nail the lid back on, and when we got to the new place, take the lid off and go to work.

    Dosen't surprise me at all,

When I was stationed in England we had a individual that had found a WWII German Bomb and thought it would be a good item to have by the door to knock the mud off his boots with.

If you look on the DENIX website ( https://www.denix.osd.mil/mmrp/mrsi/home/ ) there is a list of all the known locations that potentially are contaminated with munitions here in the United States. Most of these sites are no longer under military control.

I was Stationed at Charleston, SC for a couple of years. Every week (or month, I forget which) the city would have a recovered Civil war munitions dump explosion. It was a regular thing. The amount of recovered munitions was astounding.
