I happen to think that is a bird most wicked!
Yeah, I'd take one!
Watching the panels open for the VTOL is just cool!
That's a great video, thanks for posting.....
That is INCREDIBLE footage. The plane's lookin' awfully good, too, but that footage was just stellar. Someone remembered to bring something besides just an iPhone....
Thats pretty amazing! Looks like they are going to be able to build ships without the cats and arrestors for that thing! A couple less systems to have to worry about on the ship.
VTOL/VSTOL is cool, and has some unique capabilities, but it also guzzles fuel, and depending upon conditions/weapons loads isn't always the best choice.
We'll maintain cats and arresting gear for a long long time, because its more versatile.
We already have such ships and have for a long time. We functionally have two kinds of Carriers. The "Super Carriers" and "Amphibious Assault Ships"
This is the USS America (with some photochopped planes...)
This is one of our "full sized" Carrier. USS Nimitz.
For the severity of cost overruns and delays in the program, and the dwindling order numbers as the price climbs higher and higher, and considering that this is the most expensive project in history...it better be good.
THIS really drives the point home.
There is a carrier or two missing from that chart but it helps get the point accross about how lopsided world power is. (And the Russian Carrier here is now Chinese)
There are about 200 countries in the world, about half of the entire globes military spending is done by America. U.S. vs. The entire globe, about even odds dollar for dollar,...tech for tech, we are so far ahead it is not funny.
As that they say in Team America... AMERICA *F* YEAH!!!!!
The F-35 is not an air supremacy fighter, wasn't designed to be...
Cats and arrestor will still be needed for that faster and more heavily armed fighters other than the VSTOLs.
If they can trim 30% off of the cost it would be worth purchasing.
Like it or not we will be probably be going to become a 7 or 8 carrier Navy. Budgetary Constraints.
Interesting and worrisome reading;
I also noticed that it seems to have poor rear visibility. Since the P-51 seeing to the rear has been thought of as a good thing to do.
Is this the class of the one in that video? It looks like it has that yellow stripe running all the way down its runway. I am familiar with the full sized ones, just last year I went to San Diego and toured the Midway. My dad Was on that ship for 3 cruises, so he told me all about that one.
Considering the loss of 8 Harriers a couple weeks ago,
AND their Commanding Officer
Hope our Marines are supplemented.
