One screw up can erase decades of good behavior.

I support the blue line but that was definitely unacceptable for the detective to do. I would not be comfortable with him in any police agency.

...but he was only following orders, what about those that gave the orders?

What more do you want? They offered up a sacrifice.

Just kidding. Equal treatment for all involved would be more than appropriate. Oh, and double the payout on the wrongful death of the victim whose rights they tried to violate in a desperate attempt to mitigate their liability.

Cops are not in the military. The "he was only following orders" does not apply.

He should have went back to his superior and stated that it was both illegal and unlawful to follow such an order that violated the agreement between the hospital and police department.

Even in the military you’re toast if you follow an unlawful order.

What about the person or persons that gave the unlawful order and it was followed? Do their heads roll as well, or just the persons that followed the illegal order?

In the military, the entire chain of command, often one or two levels above where the order was given are in jeopardy.

Check out the recent episodes of high speed, very maneuverable navy warships being rammed by container ships and watch the ripples climb the chain of command.
