I remember reading a seaman's account of ferrying P-38s on a carrier in the Pacific, circa September 1945, when word arrived that the Japanese had surrendered. He watched while they bulldozed dozens of Lightnings over the side, since they were no longer needed or wanted.

Interesting find of the Dauntlesses and the Avenger in the Truk lagoon!

To be able to go back in time. Get those planes and sell them today. (All the guns, register them, so legal for sale now...)

Things I could have bought thru the mail....

There must be thousands of combat aircraft at the bottom of the sea. It's fascinating when they are found.

I wonder if, after most of us are long gone, there will be a headline:

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Found after 80 years.

In the Book Marching Orders, by Bruce Lee(no, that that Bruce Lee!), he mentions that prior to the invasion of Japan ships laden with enough train engines, rolling stock, rails, railroad ties and whatever other hardware was necessary to replace and rebuild every inch of rails in Japan. That was how much devastation was expected should we have invaded. It was all pushed off the ocean off of Okinawa.

Reminds me of two books I read recently.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Neptune's Inferno: The US Navy at Guadalcanal both by James Hornfischer

Both tell of the almost unbelievable savagery of navel warfare in the Pacific theater.

Well thanks for putting that story up. Reading some other posts here, well it kinda saddens me that P-38 Lightnings were pushed over the side. One of my favorite WWII aircraft along with the P-51 Mustang and the Corsair.

Got to see a restored P-38 fly at my local airport during an air show. Pretty cool.

My Grandfather's ship was transporting tanks and jeeps from the Philippines to a staging area for the coming invasion of Japan when the war ended. They dumped all of it somewhere in Philippine Sea.

Let's hope Chinese scrappers don't find them.
