Reading your link, it is a short summary of a hypothetical situation and a though experiment published by a Col.

I highly suspect that the US military has a lot of "plans" in place for many many different scenarios.

There is really nothing wrong with doing thought experiments and seeing where it is believed that actions will take someone. In fact, I think it is better that people think about actions and consequences BEFORE they actually have to take action.

This is what happens when you start to water down the U.S. militaries. You end up with potential mission creeps that you go "WTF?"

In the past, the U.S. militaries were trained to do one task: fight other armies.

Lately, U.S. militaries have been used in U.N. & NATO peacekeeping roles, which is more like playing regional social workers than warfighters. During the last couple of wars, the rules of engagement have been sissified. A precision missile strike or a SF operation's potential collateral damages is weighted just as heavily as the mission itself.

Didn't the Marines recently announce they were creating several battalions with police-like capabilities/equipment? Many of the equipment they train with/testing with are non-lethal stuff, like immobilizer foam, pepper balls, etc... (See other thread: "The Army Superblimp")

So yeah, if the military is now looked at as peacekeepers/social workers rather than as warfighters, then their future missions will be more policing/social work like. Natural progression of mission creep.

    Not another Col. Benson thread...

Notice to conspiracy nuts: The U.S. Military has always prepared to fight within the U.S. and even against U.S. citizens - why do you think they swear an oath to defend the constitutional against "all enemies, foreign and domestic."

    Big deal...

The US military has been used against US citizens since the founding of the Republic. George Washington was a sitting president of the United States when the Whiskey Rebellion broke out. He personally led the Army to Pennsylvania to put down the Rebellion.

    Learn some history--nothing's new.

Ummm, wow... :wow: The U.S. military's core mission is NOT to fight other armies? OK, it's already worse than I thought.

No. The military's core mission is to fight the enemy, whoever that might be.

Yes, yes. But their training and equipment are geared towards fighting other standing armies.

Oh my....this place never fails to deliver. I remember a decade ago when this place did not attract those on the fringe with their misguided conspiracies. I wish I could remember where the tipping point was. Y2K drew some in but nothing compred to current times where it is their personal soap box.

    TO: General Douglas MacArthur

    Chief of Staff, U.S., Army

The President has just now informed me that the civil government of the District of Columbia has reported to him that it is unable to maintain law and order in the District.

You, will have United States troops proceed immediately to the scene of the disorder. Cooperate fully with the District of Columbia police force which is now in charge. Surround the affected area and clear it without delay.

Turn over all prisoners to the civil authorities.

In your orders insist that any women or children who may be in the affected area be accorded every consideration and kindness. Use all humanity consistent with the due execution of the order.

    Patrick J. Hurley,

    Secretary of War

Consider the quotes on the website below and consider how things might go down in an era of flashmobs and troops recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq.
