We don't make anything anymore, expect this to happen across the board.

Since when it this news? We threw everything away a long time ago because some people said it was more practical (and profitable for them) to do so.

    From Ausairpower:

"The only Western fighter which offers a decisive advantage in all cardinal parameters over the Su-35BM/Su-35-1 is the Lockheed-Martin F-22A Raptor. On internal fuel and subsonic profiles the Flanker will outrange the F-22A slightly, and it is likely that in high alpha low speed manoeuvre the Flanker may perform better. However, in the classical high altitude high speed long range missile combat regime the Raptor will beat the Flanker every time due to the generational advantages of all aspect wideband stealth and supersonic cruise. "

I see the Russians are still copying rather than innovating.

In this field of fighter design this maybe the last “copy”. With F-22 canselled that is.

In some fields like missile design Russia maybe decades ahead. What does US have to answer Russian Yahont missile or new Topol?

"It's going to be no worse than an F-22. I've been in an F-22 and I know."

Why are we letting Russian military commanders in our F-22's?

Shrug. Technology is only as good as the chipset in it. I have a hunch if you open the hatch, you will find "Made in China" on that chip just like our equipment.

Meaning the true innovator and technology giant will be exposed.

That is a bit over simplified. Most ICs are designed in USA, fabbed in Taiwan, packaged in Thailand, and then assembled on a board in China.

Military boards are NOT made in China and often not packaged in Thailand.

America quit trying in the 70s, it has just taken this long for us to coast to a stop.

put an Air Force pilot in an F-15 w/ a good game plan and execution, and that shiny new plane wont see sunshine again. its not the plane, its the pilot and proper execution

True to a degree. Put that Air Force pilot in an F-86 and see what happens.

Half of GT is against spending money on basic R&D, then are surprised by developments like this.

How do you justify a statement like that?!
Did you take a POLL or just pull that out of the dark recesses of your *?

Yep,....right about the time the F15 was built.
The F22 is a marvel, but in flight testing it was a big POS.
Guess they finally got the bugs out.

Have you been paying attention? Every time a NASA thread comes up people pile on with the whole "spending money on science is a waste" theme.

No, I did not conduct a poll, and I think it was fairly evident that "half" was not intended to be an accurate number. However, since you feel so strongly about it I will clarify.

"Half" -> "A significant number of GT members"

If you think about it without bias you will realize that basic design is pre-determined by demands of this class of an airplane.

It is twin engine. Duh. You place them side-by-side. What is other way?
If you want internal bomb load you have to extend fuselage. Which way? Aerodynamically it can only be done side to side.

Delta shaped wing? What else can you do for supersonic speed unless it is SU-47 and they already have those.

Twin tails? That is pretty much what you have to have for an airplane of that size to be maneuverable.

So in reality your comparison is without merit. It is about as reasonable as declaring that P-51 Mustang was copied by "cheating" from Me-109 because it had same basic layout.

Let's see, this new Russian jet took flight some 20 years after the first F-22 prototype took flight.

So even if we assume that the Russian Jet is comparable to the F-22, it took the Russians 20 years longer to develop it.

However, it does not appear that the Russian Jet is even comparable:

    Link.

So we can sit back and panic, or we can look at the facts; and the facts demonstrate that Russian still has a long ways to go as far as catching up to US Military Technology.

20 years? Where did you get that? F-22 first flight was about 10-12 years ago if I remember correctly, anyway I hate to be the one to break this news to you but F-22 is CANSELLED. As NO MORE F-22! That is after only handful of them were built.

Technologically F-22 WAS THE ONLY edge over them no good Russians. Read second link in the beginning of the topic. You can sit back and relax OK. With US cutting and de-funding most advance programs the technological race is now OVER.
