I'm headed up to Maine this Sunday, way up to Eustis. Me and the guys will be hunting Ruff Grouse and Woodcock.
Sure hope it's cold at night and 50's and dry during the days. Really looking forward to getting out of S.FLA for some cool fall weather, and of course cold beers n bourbons and night around the wood stove.
    Anybody else Upland Game Hunting?

Just penned raised, never wild...and it's been a couple years. Guy I used to hunt with moved too far away to get together with and I haven't gotten a bird dog yet. Been really thinking about a GSP, but with our current lab the next would have to be a "water" dog, as we can't keep the current one out of it...if it's liquid he'll find it.

Lots of luck. Not sure how the birds are over on the western side of the state, but they are wicked scarce here on the eastern side this year. Cold wet spring wasn't good for them.
Got a report from a friend up north and not too many partridge up there yet either.
I don't bother with woodcock...too small to waste a shell on....and also a harder target than a partridge in my book.

I will be hunting pheasants along with ducks and geese later this month in Nebraska. Another goose season to grind out in Colorado.

Squirrels, rabbits and partridge here around home.
Heading to ND for a week of pheasants in November.
Small game and bird hunting is way more fun than whitetails anymore.

One Day I promised myself that I'm gonna get over the in ND to do some pheasant hunting. That too me would be some of the best!
    Good luck this year.
I'm with you on the whitetail hunting.

Agree here ^...Ruffed Grouse are extremely elusive at best.. They seem to have a knack for taking off from cover just as you are tangled up in the underbrush...Like FullClip said, Woodcocks aren’t worth the shell.. but the little suckers are fun to shoot at though damned hard to hit...

I live in Cumberland county and as Fullclip posted the birds are very scarce this year. I’ve been out twice this week and saw nothing. I should follow my cat i guess as he’s brought a few timberdoodles home. The weather has been great though, hope you guys have better luck up in Eustis.

I lost my vizsla and lost heart for upland, I had Labs before that.

But theres no feeling like going out in the woods or snowy farmlands with your dog. Its like something out of a postcard.

Just had the Lab out for Pheasants, bagged two. It's the most fun watching the Dog work. She's better at it than I am! IMG_0310.JPG IMG_0293.JPG

I hunted last weekend just east of where you're talking. I live south of eustis around 30 miles. Drove through to eustis from Jackman two weeks ago. You'll get your fifties during the day but the nights look like they will be in the upper thirties. Not great, not bad.

As fullclip said the spring wasn't a great one for them. Hunting last weekend I only got into a few birds and they were running or flying as soon as they saw you. Going out tomorrow and I was planning on heading up that way to try out some new country. I'll update this thread tomorrow.

Just remember in Maine it’s not Ruff Grouse - it’s Partridge. Pronounced Paaahtridge. Lol. Nothing like hunting the big woods up north. Enjoy!

Ha-Ha! I've always thought the differance was you call it a "Ruffed Grouse" if you shoot it on the wing and it's a "partridge" if you ground sluice it.

A guy took a friend out first time duck hunting one weekend. They get set up and don't see anything for a while. Eventually the guy notices his friend drawing a bead on a duck walking around the water's edge.

The fellow scream at him, " You are not going to shot that duck while his is walking, are you ? "

"No" , the friend replies. " I am going to wait until he stops walking."
