So I check my balance last night, and blam, there is an extra 2 grand sitting there. So, I go online and I see a wire transfer from "Standard Chart NYC smile". I haven't called my bank yet, but any ideas on wtf is going on?

I suggest you don't take it and run...

There have been previous cases where people did and got in trouble. Suggest you contact your bank. They probably typoed one digit of the account number or some thing.

As much as I could use the money, I have every intention of calling my bank here in about a half hour when I'm on my break from work.

Perhaps someone fatfingered while typing, or transposed some numbers in the bank account? Either way, they will eventually figure out the error, and come looking for the money.

I used to work as a bank attorney and remember an incident where 4 million got wired from Italy into an account of a business of one of our customers.....all by mistake of course. It was kind of funny to see all the scrambling around to get it corrected. Of course, a weekend was involved and by the time they got it all straightened out, about 4days had passed.

The company who had mistakenly got the funds claimed that it inconvenienced them, etc., etc.....anyway, I think they got to keep 4 days worth of interest on that amount. Not bad, considering that they did absolutely nothing to deserve it.

All optimistic fantasy to the contrary, the BEST thing you can do is exactly what you were gonna. Call the bank, report the error, ignore it till it's fixed. If at all possible don't use the account, and if you have to, go in to the lobby, show ID, make a withdrawal.

You can have your account frozen short term while errors are resolved, so don't leave yourself without cash. But be proactive about fixing it, because the relationship you have with your bank can be extremely useful. If and when you want YOUR error overlooked..it's nice to have good feelings as a foundation.

Any time I hear of something like this I think fraud. It could be any number of things, maybe a simple mistake , or someone sending out feelers trying to get into your account. You certainly need to get a hold of your bank and find out by who and how this was done. There has to be some cyber crime savy people around here that could tell you more than me. Something similar happened to a co worker of my wife a few years ago, I can't remember the particulars but it was a scam and they lost use of the $ in their account for a time, put a hardship on them . Don't want to worry you , but paranoia can be a useful survival skill. Good luck. Hopefully it is a slipped digit.
