I've owned one for 20+ years, and I've had ZERO problems with it. The only thing I've done to it is to polish the feed ramp. Of course, I had to have a .30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk to go along with it. They're a lot of fun to shoot.

picked it up and had to clean the heck out of it since it sat for so many years. after cleaning took it out to shoot up some french surplus ammo and other than bad primers from 1950'a era ammo this little gun ran like a top! accuracy was good for a little rifle like this and it was a lot of fun. Oh I went to a real army navy surplus store and found 15 round mags so I bought 3 more for a total of 4. They did not have the sling and oiler though. I need to find a source for that.

Some Universals have problems and not all parts interchange, others run like Glocks. Depends on what you get. Now that the Kahr M1 carbines are out, I know what I'm getting. :)

We just bought a Universal 30 carbine in stainless from the local gunshow. Has a custom handmade stock, a 30 round stainless clip with a Weaver scope. Sweet looking rifle, but there are some bad things said about the Universal brand. What areas of the gun seem to have problems ? My dealer said the rifle was in very good condition, so perhaps there will be no horror story...;e

I've had a Universal for quite a while and have had zero problems with it. Not all parts interchage with USGI such as the stock. Plus the Universal uses two recoil springs. Spare parts are available from Gun Parts Corp if you do encounter a problem.

The Universal have a bad reputation which I think they really don't deserve. This brings the prices down into the SKS range, and they're a steal in my opinion. I seldom see them selling for more than $225, and if all you want is a good plinker, it's half the cost of other commercial M1's.

I wonder how satisfied you've been with your Universal?

A 6-yr-old question. I wonder how long it took him to stop checking in. :)

I got a Universal in a "package deal", and sold it for $100 within the hour. It was a late production gun, and those just aren't worth much. The early ones were fairly good quality.

I bought one from a pawn shop 15 years ago for $110. Sold it later for $250. It grouped better than the WWII models I have. They are one of my favorite guns to shoot. My 4'11'' liberal daughter got a real blast-pun intended-out of shooting them-that is my WWII model.

Better fit & finish than the universal I had before I got it. The universal I had shot with the factory mag itcame with but had problems with the others.
